Owls Drop Two to Ranked Opponents at Columbia College Fall Classic

COLUMBIA, Mo. – The William Woods University volleyball team dropped two matches versus ranked opponents in the one day Columbia College Fall Classic. The Owls opened the tournament with a 3-0 loss to No. 13 Lindsey Wilson, and they ended the day with a 3-0 loss to No. 9 Columbia in a non-conference match. The Owls fall to 14-15 on the season.

WWU vs. No. 13 Lindsey Wilson (25-22, 25-19, 25-15)
The Owls forced LWC to a negative hitting percentage in set one (-0.033). They played even with LWC to start the set, but after a 10-10 tie, LWC went on a 10-3 run. The Owls recovered after a kill from Nise Salima halted their run. The Owls closed the scoring gap to one late in the set following a kill from Hannah Kuehl and one from Lanie Lowry, 23-22, but LWC put down a kill and an ace to end the set, 25-22.
 
The Owls battled with LWC to start set two. Following two WWU attack errors to give LWC a 12-7 lead, the Owls called a timeout. Coming out of the timeout, LWC scored two more to double the Owls' score. The Owls were unable to recover and fell 25-19.
 
LWC jumped out to an 8-2 lead to start set three and extended it to 12-4. The Owls scored three consecutive points midway through with a kill from Salima, a LWC attack error and a kill from Kate Doerhoff. The Owls were unable to close the gap however, ending the match with a 25-15 set three loss.

WWU vs. No. 9 Columbia (25-19, 25-17, 25-23)
After CC started out with an 8-2 runforcing the Owls to call a timeout, the Owls struck a 7-0 run to take a one-point lead, 9-7. The run featured kills from Zahn, Doerhoff, and Lowry and an ace from Mallorie Brooks. The Owls stayed even with the ninth-ranked team over the next few points and sat just three points behind following two CC attack errors, 21-18. CC ended the set with a 25-19 win.
 
CC once again jumped out to an 8-2 lead in set two. A CC attack error ended their 8-0 run, but they picked up again with a 6-0 run to take a 14-3 lead. Kira Krebill put down a kill towards the end of the set, followed by back-to-back blocks from Krebill and Salima to push a 4-0 run for the Owls. The run was not enough to close the gap, and CC ended the set with a kill, 25-17.
 
Salima started set three with three consecutive kills to give the Owls a 3-0 lead. CC quickly responded with three points, but the two teams went back-and-forth over the next points. The Owls played even with CC throughout the set. After trailing by four late in the set, a service error helped jumpstart the Owls' late set run. A kill from Kuehl, followed by a Doerhoff kill, brought the Owls within one, 21-20. The Owls took the lead with three consecutive kills, forcing CC to take a timeout with the Owls up 23-22. CC came out of the timeout and scored the next two points, forcing the Owls to call a timeout. CC put down the final kill of the match to end the Owls' day with a 25-23 loss.
