Owls Win Fourth Straight with Last Second Bucket

LINCOLN, Ill. – The William Woods University men's basketball team won their fourth straight game with a last second bucket to beat out non-conference Lincoln College (Ill.) Tuesday evening, 79-77. The win brings the Owls to 5-3 on the season.
 
The Owls take a week off for the holiday before returning to conference action with a home game versus Harris-Stowe State University on Tuesday, Dec. 3. Tip-off is slated for 7:30 p.m. in Anderson Arena.
 
By The Numbers
22 – Andrew Nett lit up the three-point line with seven made, tying the three-point game day record and totaling 22 points on the night.
21 – Tyriel Nelson shot 9-for-18 from the field for 21 points, hitting the game-winning bucket with three seconds on the clock.
10 – Makenzie Fessler and Darius Yohe each pulled down 10 boards. Yohe recorded a double-double with 16 points.
6 – Nelson dished in a team-high six assists.
3 – Yohe blocked three shots, and Matt Burgess recorded a team-high three steals.
 
Game Flow
LC got on the board first with a bucket following tip-off. Andrew Nett hit his first of seven threes on the Owls' first possession, and the Owls traded buckets over the next four minutes.
 
Back-to-back buckets in the paint by Codi Whitlock sparked a 14-0 run over a three-minute span to take a 12-point lead, 26-14, but LC answered back with a 21-0 run to push ahead by nine with 7:55 to play in the first half, 35-26.
 
Tyriel Nelson scored eight of the Owls' 9-0 run to even the score with 4:06 to play, 35-35.
 
The Owls and LC knotted up three more times over the remaining time, but LC hit a three at the buzzer to take a three-point lead heading into the locker room, 45-42.
 
The Owls struggled to start the second half, allowing LC to take a 19-point lead through the first six minutes of play.
 
A long jumper from Darius Yohe finally broke the Owls silence, and the Owls slowly chipped away at their deficit. 
 
Following a foul on the play and two technicals on LC, Makenzie Fessler went 4-for-4 from the line and Nelson hit his two to cut the game to eight just over halfway through the second half, 63-55.
 
A bucket from Darius Yohe jump started another 9-0 run that gave the Owls a one-point lead with 7:15 on the clock, 66-65.
 
A three from Nett gave the Owls a five-point lead with two minutes remaining, but LC quickly evened the score and took a one-point lead with just under a minute to play, 77-76.
 
A good free throw from Fessler evened the score with 38 seconds to play, 77-77. 
 
The Owls fouled to stop the clock, sending LC to the line for one-and-one. LC missed their free throw, and D'Aaron Owens pulled down the board with nine seconds on the clock. 
 
Nelson hit a long jumper with three seconds left in the game to put the Owls up by two, 79-77. LC immediately called a timeout, followed by another timeout, to set up their final play.
 
They fired off a three just before the buzzer but missed, ending the game with an Owls 79-77 win.
