Owls Pull Out Win Over FHU

HENDERSON, Tenn. – The William Woods University volleyball team pulled out a 3-2 win over Freed-Hardeman University Saturday afternoon to clinch the four-seed in the American Midwest Conference. The Owls improve to 18-18 on the season with a 9-3 conference mark.
 
The Owls won 25-20, 26-24, 26-28, 22-25, 15-11.
 
With the Saturday win, the Owls will host FHU in the quarterfinal round of the AMC Championship on Tuesday, Nov. 12. First serve is slated for 7 p.m.  
 
By The Numbers
.350 – The Owls hit .350 in the fifth and final set of the match. 
.342 – Hannah Kuehl posted a .342 hitting percentage with 16 kills.
64 – The Owls recorded 64 kills in the match. 
50 – Remie Johnson assisted in 50 kills.
16 – Kuehl and Ally Konarzewski each recorded 16 kills.

Game Flow
FHU jumped out to a 7-1 lead to start the match. The Owls slowly chipped away, and they evened the score at 14 all with back-to-back kills. The play remained even until two FHU attack errors put the Owls up 22-20. Following the errors, Kuehl put down back-to-back kills to bring set one to set point, and a block from Johnson and Lanie Lowry concluded the 5-0 run to end the set with a 25-20 win.
 
FHU once again grabbed an early lead, going up 9-4 to start set two. The Owls finally evened the score at 15-15, and a FHU attack error gave the Owls their first lead of the set, 17-16. The Owls stayed one step ahead, but FHU tied the match up three times in the final points. With the set tied 24-24, Kuehl smashed down a kill to go up yet again. This time, FHU committed an error to end the set with a 26-24 Owls' win, giving them a 2-0 advantage over FHU.
 
Set three was even until FHU struck a 6-1 run to take a 15-9 lead. They continued to hold the lead and possessed a 19-14 lead before the Owls took their second timeout. Coming out of the timeout, the Owls closed the gap to three. FHU put down a kill to bring the set to set point, 24-21, but Lowry and Johnson combined for the next three kills to tie it up. FHU went ahead by one, but Lowry put down her fifth kill of the set to even the score once more. A block by Zahn and Riley Alton put the Owls up by one, but two consecutive errors put FHU back in the lead. FHU ended the set with a kill to keep them alive, 28-26.
 
Both needing the win, FHU and WWU played even throughout set four. FHU took a three-point lead midway through and held on to it. The Owls halted FHU on set point with a block by Faith McQueen and Zahn, and a kill by Konarzewski brought the set to 25-22, forcing FHU to call a timeout, but FHU ended the set with a kill on the next play.
 
FHU served first in set five, and after a close start, WWU jumped to an 8-3 lead. FHU closed the set to 8-6 after the teams switched sides, but Kuehl put down a kill to stop it. Zahn picked up three kills in the final points, and Konarzewski ended the match with a kill to win it 15-11.
