Men’s Basketball Falls at Buzzer to Columbia

COLUMBIA, Mo. – The William Woods University men's basketball team lost at the buzzer to Columbia College (Mo.) Thursday evening, 70-68. The loss brings the Owls to 5-5 on the season with a 2-2 conference mark.
 
The Owls next travel to Belleville, Ill. for a road game versus Lindenwood University-Belleville on Saturday, Dec. 7. Tip-off is at 3 p.m.
 
By The Numbers
47.4 – The Owls shot 47.4 percent from beyond the arc. In the first half, the team shot 50 percent.
11 – Andrew Nett scored a team-high 11 points with three three-pointers.
11 – All 11 players that got minutes scored at least two points.
10 – Treshawn Gause added 10 points to the board.
8 – Makenzie Fessler pulled down a team-high eight rebounds.
4 – Gause dished in four assists.
 
Game Flow
CC took a 4-0 lead to start the game, and it wasn't until D'Aaron Owens hit a three with 17:09 on the clock that the Owls got on the board. He added two more to take the lead, but CC gained control again a minute later.
 
After giving him space, Makenzie Fessler hit a three to take back the lead with 11:35 on the clock, 12-10. CC evened the score and went on an 8-0 run over the next two minutes to take a six-point lead, 18-12.
 
A three from Mike Robinson and an in the paint bucket from Codi Whitlock brought the Owls within two with 2:53 to play in the first, 22-20. CC went up by five twice, but Andrew Nett drained a three with five seconds on the clock to cut the game to two heading into halftime, 27-25.
 
Despite tying the game up three times in the second half, the Owls were never able to gain possession of the lead again. 
 
Matt Burgess started the scoring for the Owls in the second half with a three to cut the game to one, 29-28. Over the next three minutes, CC pushed out a seven-point lead, 37-30.
 
A bucket from Whitlock and two free throws from Tyriel Nelson brought the Owls within three, 37-34. Robinson hit back-to-back threes to bring the Owls within two with 13:08 left to play, 42-40. 
 
After CC once again pushed out a six-point lead, the Owls worked to close the gap again. Two good free throws from Robinson and a short jumper from Darius Yohe brought the Owls within two, and just over halfway through the second half, Jason Mason hit a long jumper to cut the game to one, 49-48.
 
With 6:25 on the clock, Ian Hodges scored two to tie the game at 55 all. CC scored the next four points to take back the lead, but Gause scored four to tie the game again with 3:11 on the clock, 61-61.
 
CC pushed back out by five with two shots, but a three by Nett brought the Owls within two with 1:41 on the clock, 68-66.
 
After a WWU timeout, Fessler scored in the paint with 20 seconds left of play to tie the game, 68-68.
 
It was CC's turn for the timeout to decide on their one final play. CC's leading scorer missed with just seconds on the clock, but they grabbed the offensive rebound and put it back up at the buzzer to win the game, 70-68.
