FULTON, Mo. – Junior
David Johnson Jr. broke the season blocks record in Saturday's thrilling double overtime win over Central Baptist College, 83-78. The Owls move to 17-10 on the season with a 14-6 conference mark. With the win, the Owls move back to second place, tied with Hannibal-LaGrange.
Johnson Jr. scored a team-high 18 points while
Makenzie Fessler went 6-for-6 from the field for 16 points.
The battle for second place in the AMC will take place on Thursday, Feb. 21, in Anderson Arena. The Owls will host Hannibal-LaGrange for their final home game of the season and the winner will take hold of second place prior to the final game of the season.
Game Flow
CBC took the lead with a three on their second possession of the game. The Owls kept the game close, but CBC scored seven unanswered points just over halfway through the first to take a 10-point lead, 25-15.
A three from
Matt Burgess with 2:19 on the clock followed by back-to-back jumpers from
Treshawn Gause brought the Owls within two with 1:19 to play, but CBC scored the final points of the half to hold a five-point lead heading into halftime, 37-32.
Fessler scored on the Owls first possession of the second half, and
Shad Kimble scored two in the paint following a Gause steal to bring the game within one less than a minute in.
The Owls tied the game for the first time with a put back by
Codi Whitlock with 14:27 to play in regulation, 42-42.
CBC put up a 9-1 run following the tie to go up by eight, but the Owls answered back with a 10-0 run to take their first lead of the day, 53-51.
CBC took back the lead with a five-point run.
With 1:03 on the clock, Fessler hit a jumper to bring the Owls within three, and with 40 seconds on the clock a three from
Shad Kimble knotted the game at 60 all.
David Johnson Jr. recorded his season breaking block on CBC attempt at the winning bucket. CBC got the rebound and attempted three more shots down low before Fessler came out with the rebound.
Johnson Jr. took the game-winning shot attempt just before the buzzer but missed, sending the game into overtime.
Johnson Jr. scored the first five points for the Owls, pushing a three-point lead a minute into overtime.
After three ties, CBC took a two-point lead with 28 seconds on the clock with two good free throws, but with 16 seconds on the clock, Johnson Jr. hit a bucket with Fessler's assist to tie it up.
With CBC in possession in the final seconds, the Owls looked to hold CBC from scoring. A forced turnover and steal from Johnson Jr. sent the game into the second overtime with the game tied 69-69.
CBC took out a five-point lead to start the game, and it wasn't until Fessler was sent to the line with 1:43 that they were able to take the lead.
Gause added two on a long jump shot to put the Owls up by three. CBC went 2-for-2 from the foul line to cut the game to one with 33 seconds on the clock, but Whitlock went 2-for-2 just seconds later to go back up by three.
Forced to foul following a
Brian Enriquez steal, CBC sent him to the line with :04 on the clock. Enriquez sank both, giving the Owls a five-point lead.
The Owls defense held CBC from taking a last chance shot, ending the double overtime game with an 83-78 win.
