BATESVILLE, Ark. – The William Woods University baseball team dropped two in their conference opening day at Lyon College. The Owls dropped game one, 5-1, before falling in game two, 7-3. The Owls fall to 5-8-1 on the season with a 0-2 conference mark.
The Owls will close out their three-game series with Lyon on Monday with a single nine-inning game beginning at 12 p.m.
Game One
Lyon scored three in the bottom of the first on a three-run home run over the right field fence and added a fourth in the bottom of the third with a RBI double.
Jordan Smith led off the top of the fifth inning with a walk.
Tyler Bracht moved J. Smith to third with a double down the left field line, and
Trevor Garriott hit a sacrifice fly to center field, scoring J. Smith.
Tyler Bracht advanced to third on
Connor Poulson's fly out but was left stranded as the third out came on the next at-bat.
Lyon added one more run in the bottom of the fifth to bring the score to 5-1.
The Owls managed to get just one runner in scoring position in the top of the seventh on a wild pitch, but a strikeout ended the game with a 5-1 loss.
Bracht and
Marquise Doherty each recorded a double.
Taran Oulton (1-2) pitched the complete game and struck out five.
Quincy Jones recorded seven putouts, following by
Tim Redford with five.
Game Two
Lyon opened up the scoring in game two with a RBI single in the bottom of the second.
The Owls tied it up with a lead-off home run over right field by
Russell Strilchuk in the top of the fourth.
Lyon answered back with four runs in the bottom of the fourth to take up a 5-1 lead.
The Owls brought the game to 5-3 with two runs scored in the top of the sixth. J. Smith led off the inning with a single to left field. He was moved to second on Bracht's walk, third on Poulson's fly out and scored on
Quincy Jones' single to right field. Doherty was hit by a pitch, loading the bases with two outs.
Isaiah Gibbs singled up the middle to bring home Bracht. The Owls left three stranded though as the third out came on a strikeout.
Lyon added two more runs in the bottom of the inning on a two RBI single, bringing the score to 7-3.
The Owls were unable to score again over the next three innings, ending game two with a 7-3 loss.
The Owls recorded 12 hits in the game with Strilchuk leading the way with three. Doherty and Gibbs each recorded two.
Travis Hennessey (1-1) was credited with the loss. He pitched 3.1 innings and struck out five.
Jones recorded 10 putouts, following by
Chase Gibson with seven. Bracht and J. Smith each recorded five assists.
