Owls’ Comeback Falls Short in Series Finale at Lyon, 8-6

Box Score BATESVILLE, Ark.– The William Woods University baseball team closed out the three-game series with Lyon on Monday with a single nine-inning game. Despite the Owls late game comeback attempts, the team fell 8-6.
 
The Owls play host to Missouri Baptist for a three-game series for their home-opener starting on Friday, March 1.
 
Game Flow
Lyon put up five runs in the bottom of the second to take an early lead. They added three more in the fourth with a three-run home run over left field to take an 8-0 lead.
 
In the top of the fifth, the Owls recorded three of their seven hits and scored three runs. 
 
With two outs and Jordan Smith on first following a fielder's choice, Tyler Bracht doubled down the left field line to score J. Smith. Bracht then scored on Russell Strilchuk's single to right-center field. Connor Poulson reached on a walk, moving Strilchuk to second. With a 0-2 count at the plate, Quincy Jones smashed a double down the right field line to score Strilchuk and move Poulson to third. The third out came on the next at-bat, leaving two stranded on base.
 
The Owls added three more in the eighth to bring the game to 8-6.
 
Bases were loaded with one out after a Jones single, a hit by pitch and a walk. Garriott hit a two RBI single to score Jones and Doherty and move Gibbs to third. Chase Gibson next reached on a fielder's choice, scoring Gibbs but forcing Garriott out on the play for the second out of the inning. A pop out ended the inning. 
 
The Owls' defense left a Lyon runner stranded at third in the bottom of the eighth, sending the game into the final inning with the Owls trailing by two, 8-6.
 
Bracht was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning, and after a fly out, Poulson singled to center field to put two runners on, but two outs came next to end the game. 
 
Jones went 2-for-5 from the plate with a double and an RBI. Garriott recorded two RBI.
 
Hayden Davey (1-1) was credited with the loss on the mound. He pitched the first three innings and struck out four. Collin Kessler pitched an inning, and Allan Brown pitched the final four innings with two strikeouts.
