FULTON, Mo. –The William Woods University Women's Basketball team held on Wednesday evening to defeat Williams Baptist University in the quarterfinals round of the American Midwest Conference Tournament. The Owls move to 21-10 on the season with the win.
Kaycee Gerald and
Peyton Greenlee led the Owls with 17 points and nine rebounds. Also pulling down nine boards was
Kasey Hazell.
The Owls travel to Henderson, Tenn. for the semifinals round of the Tournament. They play AMC Regular Season Champion No. 1 Freed-Hardeman on Friday, March 1, at 7 p.m. The winner moves to the Championship game held on Monday, March 4.
Game Flow
WBU scored first in the game off a fast break, but the Owls scored the next eight over a four-minute period to take an 8-2 lead. WBU cut the game to three with 1:26 left in the first quarter.
The Owls scored the final six points of the quarter to take a nine-point lead heading into the second quarter, 16-7.
The Owls pushed the lead to 14 with a 7-0 run fueled by Greenlee and Gerald. The Owls maintained a double-digit lead throughout the second quarter, and a three from
Lexy Ganaway with 40 seconds on the clock put the Owls up by 15.
WBU scored the final points of the half with a three, sending the game into halftime with the Owls leading 33-21.
The Owls opened the second half with a two from
Kasey Hazell, but WBU scored five to cut the game to nine with 7:28 on the clock.
The Owls held WBU from scoring again in the quarter while dominating a 14-0 run to close out the quarter, 49-26.
With a 25-point lead following a
Tori Nesslage bucket to start the final quarter, WBU scored 11 straight to bring the game within 14.
Back-to-back-to-back threes from WBU's Katie Ferguson within a minute span cut the game to seven, and they added two more to their 12-0 run to bring the game within five with 4:31 still to play.
Gerald hit a three to break the Owls' silence, but WBU continued to press and force turnovers, causing the gap to stay within single digits.
With 42 seconds to play, WBU cut the game to three with a three-pointer.
The Owls pushed their lead back to seven with a two from
Ashleigh Frampton and two from the foul line from Hazell. With 14 seconds on the clock, the Owls held a seven-point lead, 70-63.
WBU hit a three with seconds to go but fouled to stop the clock, sending
Bailey Rollins to the line. Rollins hit both, giving the Owls the 72-66 advantage.
Despite WBU outscoring the Owls 40-23 in the final quarter to close the gap, the Owls prevailed with the 72-66 win.
