Owls Fourth Quarter Push Not Enough as They Fall 56-53 to Freed-Hardeman in AMC Tournament Semifinals

HENDERSON, TENN. – The William Woods University women's basketball team played their final game of the 2018-19 season Friday night as they fell 57-53 to Freed-Hardeman in the semifinals of the American Midwest Conference Tournament. The Owls finished their season 21-11 overall and 16-8 in the AMC.
 
Kaycee Gerald led the owls with 18 points and 9 rebounds. Peyton Greenlee followed with 16 points and 4 rebounds of her own. Ashleigh Frampton chipped in 9 points and added 4 rebounds in the contest.
 
Game Flow
Freed-Hardeman opened the game with a two-point basket coming from Amaria Pugh that gave them an early 2-0 lead. WWU tied the game moments later, on two Gerald free throws.
 
5-minutes into the first period, Chynia Brooks knocked down a three-point basket to give the Lions a 6-2 lead. The basket also sparked a 6-0 run to put FHU up 12-2.
 
Finally, after a three-point frenzy, WWU's Frampton was able to find the bottom of the net on her two-point attempt. But it would not be enough as the Lions were able to score four straight points and go into the second half ahead 16-4.
 
After catching fire midway through the first period, Freed-Hardeman continued their run. 5-minutes into the second period they found themselves ahead 19 their largest lead of the game. They would eventually go up 21 before a Frampton three-pointer that decreased the deficit to 18.
 
Immediatley following the Frampton three, was Gerald for a fast break and-one. She converted on her free throw attempt and put the Owls down 15.
 
With 46-secondds remaining in the half, Haylee Croom knocked down a nice midrange jump shot that put Freed back up 17. Sommer Burgard responded with a two-pointer of her own, but Pugh was able to beat the buzzer and give the Lions a 32-15 halftime lead.
 
With momentum on their side, Freed-Hardeman continued their hot steak. After dominating majority of the first half, they found themselves ahead 22 late in the third period.
 
William Woods was able to get within 16 before the start of the final period.
 
After trailing big majority of the game, the Owls were able to get within nine when Gerald connected on a fast break lay-in. Immediately following the lay-in was Greenlee for a huge three-point basket that put WWU down 52-46. 1-minute later Greenlee knocked down another three-pointer that put them within three of Freed.
 
With 3:10 remaining on the game clock, Frampton hit a huge two-point basket that made the score 54-53 in the Lions favor.
 
The next basket would not be scored until 22-seconds remained in the half. Brooks was fouled  and sent to line where she went 1-2.
 
Down 55-53, WWU attempted one last shot before having to foul and send Croom to line where she went 2-2 with 3 seconds left.
 
William Woods would not attempt another shot and Freed-Hardeman would walk away with a 56-53 American Midwest Conference Tournament Semifinals victory.
