FT WORTH, TX. – William Woods University softball captured their second loss of the season Saturday afternoon falling 6-1 to Bellevue University in the Cowtown Classic. The Owls finished 2-2 in the classic.
WWU returns to action Saturday Feb. 16
th as they face Baker University (Kan.) in their first game of the Evangel University Tournament. First pitch is set for 2 p.m.
Game Flow
Both teams got of to a slow start in the first couple innings. At the top of the third,
Bri Devellano recorded the first hit of the game and advanced to first base.
Kaitlyn Jennings and
Ari Arnold but fielded out to end the top of the third.
After a scoreless first few innings, Bellevue was finally able to bring in two runs when Erin Sharpe hit a homerun over the fence to give them a 2-0 lead. Kaitlyn Kinman was able to reach second on her hit but would be forced out later in the inning. Ashley Young grounded out to second and would wrap of the third inning.
Down 2-0 the Owls were not able to make much happen at the top of the fourth.
At the bottom of the fourth, BU was able to increase their lead. Kelsey Arnold (who was pinch hitting) reached first on a walk. Kayla Lehigh was next to bat but sacrificed bunted and put Arnold on second.
With one on second, Kylee Sarget hit a huge triple down center field bringing Arnold home making the score 3-0. On the same play Sarget was able to score on a WWU error pushing their lead to 4-0.
Towards the end of the inning, Ellie Bliemeister and Ernin Sharpe scored on Grace Glotfelty's double giving Bellevue a 6-0 advantage.
With BU ahead 6-0, the Owls needed a spark. They were able to finally get on the board in the top of the sixth when Darcie Depping scored on
Alli Massey's single and put WWU down 6-1.
Neither team made much noise in the final innings and Bellevue University would walk away with a 6-1 victory.
