Owls Drop Two in Home-Opener

ASHLAND, Mo. – The William Woods University baseball team hosted RV Missouri Baptist University for their home-opener on Friday at Southern Boone High School. The Owls dropped both games of the doubleheader, bringing them to 5-11-1 on the season.
 
The Owls close out the three-game series with MBU on Saturday, March 2, with a 1 p.m. nine-inning game.
 
Game One
MBU scored four in the fourth inning and added one more in the top of the seventh to take a 5-0 lead. The Owls were unable to get a runner in scoring position in the bottom of the seventh, ending the game with a 5-0 loss.
 
The Owls were held to just three hits in the game with one double from J. Smith.
 
Quincy Jones (0-2) pitched 3.1 innings to start the game and struck out four. Allan Brown came in as relief and pitched the remaining 3.2 innings.
 
 
Game Two
MBU scored first in the second game in the top of the third following a triple. They took a 2-0 lead in the fourth inning with an RBI groundout.
 
In the bottom of the sixth following a pitching change, Connor Poulson doubled to deep center field. Poulson scored the Owls' first run of the day on Quincy Jones' RBI single to center field. Isaiah Gibbs singled to move Jones to third, and Chase Gibson's sacrifice bunt moved Gibbs to second, but a groundout ended the inning with one run scored and two runners stranded.
 
The Owls took the 3-2 lead in the bottom of the seventh as they scored two on Poulson's RBI double to deep left-center field. 
 
In the top of the ninth with two outs, MBU hit a two-run home run over the left field fence to take back the lead, 4-3. The Owls finished the inning with a groundout, bringing the game to the bottom of the ninth.
 
The Owls were unable to get a runner on, ending the game with a 4-3 loss. 
 
Taran Oulton (1-3) pitched the complete game and struck out three.
 
Gibbs went 3-for-4 from the plate. Poulson went 2-for-3 from the plate with two doubles, two RBI and one run scored.
