ASHLAND, Mo. – The William Woods University Baseball team dropped the series finale with RV Missouri Baptist on Saturday afternoon, 14-5. The loss drops the Owls to 5-12-1 on the season and leaves them searching for their first conference win.
The Owls travel to Harris-Stowe State University for a three-game conference series in St. Louis starting on Thursday, March 7. The Owls face the Hornets in a doubleheader on Thursday starting at 12 p.m. with the third game held on Friday, March 8, at 3 p.m.
Game Flow
MBU opened up the scoring in the top of the first with an RBI single and a two RBI double. They added four more in the top of the third with two coming from a two-run home run to take a 7-0 lead.
In the bottom of the third,
Trevor Garriott and
Alex Wimer scored on
Quincy Jones' single after both being walked.
MBU matched the Owls two runs in the bottom of the inning with two RBI singles to give them a 9-2 lead. They added one more in the top of the sixth.
In the bottom of the sixth, the Owls put up three runs on four hits.
Jake Fleming reached base on a fielder's choice and was moved to second on a ground out.
Chase Gibson's single moved Fleming to third, and Garriott's single just over third base brought him home. Garriott and
Tristan Steffens, pinch runner for
Chase Gibson, crossed home plate on
Douglas Martin's RBI single to left-center field. With
Jordan Smith's walk, bases were loaded with two outs. MBU made a pitching change, and the final out came on the next pitch.
MBU added four more runs in the seventh and eighth while holding the Owls from scoring again, ending the game with a 14-5 loss.
The Owls recorded seven hits coming from seven different players.
Douglas Martin and
Quincy Jones recorded two RBI each.
Travis Hennessey (1-2) was credited with the loss. He struck out four.
