FULTON, Mo. – The William Woods University softball team upset No. 18 Lyon College in game one of Sunday's doubleheader, 3-2. The Owls dropped game two 3-0, ending the day with a split.
The Owls move to 6-13 on the season with a 1-3 conference mark.
The Owls continue their four-date home stretch with a doubleheader versus Hannibal-LaGrange University on Tuesday, March 19. First pitch is set for 2 p.m.
Game One
Lyon put up their two runs in the top of the first with two RBI singles.
The Owls were unable to produce much until the fourth inning. In the bottom of the fourth,
Anna Counts led off with a single to left field. She advanced to second on a passed ball and crossed home plate on
Emma Walker's RBI triple to right field. With Walker and
Ari Arnold on base,
Celeste Sermeno put down a perfect bunt just far enough out from the batter's box to reach base, score Walker and advance Arnold to second. Arnold scored the go-ahead run and later the winning run on
Emily Robinett's single to shallow center field. Sermeno advanced to second and was thrown out trying to advance to third to end the inning.
Lyon had a runner in scoring position in the top of the fifth, but the Owls' defense grabbed the final two outs to leave the runners stranded.
The Owls attempted to add more runs in the bottom of the sixth with bases loaded with two walks and a single, but a fly out ended the inning with the three stranded.
It was do-or-die in the top of the seventh for Lyon. They had two runners in scoring position with two outs, but a fly out to shallow center field ended the game with a 3-2 upset.
Emma Walker went 2-for-3 from the plate with a triple, an RBI and a run scored.
Madison Ausfahl (3-6) pitched the complete game and grabbed the win from in the circle. She struck out four.
Game Two
The Owls and Lyon were each unable to find home plate throughout the four innings.
In the top of the fifth, Lyon put the first run of the game up on an RBI bunt. They added a second run in the sixth with a sacrifice squeeze bunt, and their third in the top of the seventh on a RBI double.
The Owls were held to just two hits in the game.
Brittany Roady (3-5) pitched 6.1 innings and struck out five.
Alexis Hassler came in to close out the game.
