Owls Fall 5-4 to Harris-Stowe in First of Three Game Series

ST. LOUIS, Mo. – William Woods University baseball dropped the first of a three-game series Thursday afternoon as they fell 5-4 to Harris-Stowe. WWU is now 5-13 on the season.

The Owls return to action Friday Mar. 8 at 3 p.m. and again at 5 p.m. to finish the series between the Hornets.

Game Flow
William Woods opened the game off strong. Isiah Gibbs knocked one out of the park on 1-1 count and put the Owls up 1-0 in the top of the first.

Harris-Stowe responded to WWU by scoring their first run when Chase Goldwater stole home and tied the game 1-1. Moments later, Cole Danielson and David Pound scored on a Jake Benolken single, giving them a 3-1 lead. A pop fly would end the inning and the Hornets would go into the top of third ahead.

After a huge HSSU inning, the Owls were able to tie the game at 3-3 in the top of the third as Gibbs and Marquise Doherty scored on a Quincy Jones' two RBI single.  The final out was recorded before WWU could score again.

Neither team made much happen until the bottom of the 6th when the Hornets scored two runs. David Pound and Noah Doyle were able to reach home on a Caleb Hill single to give Harris-Stowe a 5-4 lead.

The Owls added one in the top of the ninth on Connor Poulson's sacrifice fly to right field, bringing Jordan Smith home and moving Gibbs to third. Gibbs was left stranded as the third out came on the next at-bat, ending the game with a 5-4 loss.
