Defensive Games vs. Columbia Ends with Split

ASHLAND, Mo. –The William Woods University baseball team split with Columbia College Sunday afternoon. CC won game one in the 11thinning, 3-1, but the Owls bounced back for a 2-0 game two win.
 
The Owls move to 11-21-1 on the season with a 4-15 conference mark.
 
The Owls will close out the three-game series with the Cougars on Monday, April 1, at 6 p.m.
 
 
Game One
The first five innings were as a defensive battle as neither team was able to find home plate. CC recorded just two hits in the five innings while the Owls were unable to post a hit. 
 
In the top of the sixth, CC scored on a two-out RBI single to take a 1-0 lead.
 
In the bottom of the inning, Chase Gibson led off with a walk. Alex Wimer pinch ran for Gibson and was moved to second on Jordan Smith's sacrifice bunt. He moved to third on Brian Granton's bunt and scored on Marquise Doherty's RBI fielder's choice to tie the game at 1-1.
 
The Owls defense pulled out of bases loaded in the top of the seventh, leaving the game tied heading into the bottom of the inning. The Owls were held to three up, three down in the bottom of the inning, sending the game into extra innings. 
 
Both teams were three up, three down in the next two innings, sending the game into the 10thinning. 
 
In the bottom of the 10thwith two outs, Tyler Bracht singled to shallow center field. Trevor Garriott followed with a single to left-center field, but a pop fly ended the inning with two runners stranded.
 
In the top of the 11th, CC put one runner on with a single to the left field grass. The next batter up hit the ball over the left-center fence on a 2-1 count to give CC a 3-1 lead. The Owls easily ended the inning on the next play with a ground out to third.
 
The Owls had to score in the bottom, but CC held them to three up, three down to end the game with a 3-1 loss in the 11thinning.
 
Taran Oulton (2-6) pitched the complete game and was credited with the loss. He struck out 10 in the 11 innings on the mound.
 
The Owls had just four hits with three coming in the 10thinning. 
 
 
Game Two
Since game one went into extra innings, game two switched to the seven-inning game of the doubleheader.
 
The Owls took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the third with Doherty's two RBI double to deep left-center field, bringing home Wimer and Jordan Smith.
 
The Owls were unable to get on the board again but the defense held CC to just two hits and forced three runners stranded on base to win the game.
 
Travis Hennessey (3-3) pitched the complete game shutout win. He allowed just two hits while striking out three.
