Late Error Moves Owls Past Columbia 8-7

FULTON, Mo. – The William Woods University Baseball team defeated Columbia 8-7 in a 10-inning contest. The victory gives the Owls a 2-1 series win over the Cougars. WWU is now 12-21-1 overall and 5-15 in the AMC.
 
Game Flow
Columbia opened the contest with a late first-inning run. Ward Mershon was able to reach Homeplate on a Dalton Bealmer single and put CC up 1-0.
 
William Woods immediately responded in the bottom of the inning when Isaiah Gibbs scored on a sacrifice ground out.
 
The game remained tied until the top of the third inning. Late in the inning, Bealmer knocked one over the left field fence that sent Joshua Miller home and put Columbia back up 3-1.
 
The Owls had a huge response in the bottom third. Doeherty was able to put WWU down one when he crossed home plate thanks to a sacrifice fly. Zach Smith scored the tying run for William Woods as he was also able to reach home on a Quincy Jones single down right field.  With the game tied 3-3, Jones was able to give the Owls their first lead of the contest when he reached home on a Chase Gibson single down center right field; Alex Wimer also scored on the single and put the Owls ahead 5-3.
 
But the Cougars would not disappear as they responded with two-runs of their own in the top of the fourth.
 
William Woods did not respond to the quick Columbia but would remain 5-5.
 
In the bottom of the fifth-inning, WWU was able to regain their lead. Midway through the inning Wimer was able to cross the home plate bag once again and give the Owls a 6-5 lead.
 
Columbia College could not respond in the top of the seventh and remained behind one.
 
Late in the bottom of the seventh-inning, Jones was able to cross the plate due to an error and give William Woods their largest lead of the night 7-5.
 
But the Cougars would respond once again in the top of the eight scoring two late runs to put them behind one.
 
William Woods could not get things going in the bottom of the eight and remained tied 7-7.
 
It would not be until the bottom of the 10th-inning that another run would be scored. Doeherty would score the game winning run due to a wild throw. The run was good enough to give the Owls an 8-7 victory. William Woods went on the win the three game series between Columbia 2-1.
