Owls Softball Grabs One Win on Final Day at THE Spring Games

CLERMONT, Fla. – The William Woods University Softball team closed out their spring break trip at THE Spring Games with three games on Thursday. The Owls won game one against Grace (Ind.), 2-0. The Owls then lost their last two games, falling 8-1 to Bellevue (Neb.) and 9-2 to Cornerstone (Mich.).

The Owls return home 5-10 on the season following their eight-game spring break trip.

The Owls host Culver-Stockton (Mo.) for a doubleheader on March 12 for their home-opener. First pitch is slated for 2 p.m.

Owls vs. Grace (Ind.), W 2-0
In the top of the third, Madison Ausfahl hit an RBI single to score Celeste Sermeno to take a 1-0 lead. 

The Owls added the second and last run of the game in the top of the seventh with Ausfahl's RBI groundout to bring home Anna Counts.

Counts went 2-for-4 from the plate with one run scored. Ausfahl went 1-for-3 with two RBI.

Brittany Roady (3-3) pitched a complete game shutout and struck out six while only walking one.

Owls vs. Bellevue (Neb.), L 8-1
Bellevue took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first on an RBI single. With bases loaded, the Owls got the out at home to keep Bellevue from adding a second run, and a pop out got the Owls out of the inning with just one run as damage.

The Owls evened the score in the bottom of the inning with an Emma Walker RBI double to score Counts after she singled and was moved to second on Sermeno's sacrifice bunt.

Both teams were scoreless until Bellevue scored three in the top of the fifth to take a 4-1 lead. They tacked on four more in the top of the sixth to go up 8-1.

The Owls were unable to put a runner on in the sixth and seventh innings, ending the game with an 8-1 loss.

The Owls were held to just three hits in the game.

Ausfahl (2-5) pitched the complete game and struck out three while allowing just one earned run. 

Owls vs. Cornerstone (Mich.), L 9-2
CU put up three runs in the top of the first, all unearned.

The Owls scored one in the bottom of the inning off Alli Massey's RBI single to bring Counts home, but CU added three more in the top of the second inning to take a 6-1 lead.

In the bottom of the fifth, Bri Devellano doubled down the left field line and was moved to third with Count's bunt. Devellano scored the Owl's second run of the game with Darcie Depping's RBI single to right-center field. Two infield pop outs ended the inning before the Owls could add more runs. 

CU added three more runs in the top of the seventh to take a 9-2 lead.

Hanna Knipp and Counts hit back-to-back singles in the bottom of the seventh on one out, but two outs followed, leaving them stranded and closing out the game with a 9-2 loss. 

The Owls grabbed eight hits from the plate, led by Counts with three. Depping went 2-for-4 from the plate with one RBI.

Alexis Hassler (0-2) pitched the complete game and struck out six.
