CONWAY, Ark. –The William Woods University baseball team split with Central Baptist College to close out the three-game series Friday. The owls grabbed an 8-3 win in game one, but dropped game two 9-2 to lose the series.
The Owls move to 16-27-1 on the season.
Next up for the Owls is a non-conference home doubleheader versus Missouri Valley on Tuesday, April 16, starting at 5 p.m.
Game One
The Owls started off the game with a two-run single from
Marquise Doherty through the short stop hole. A balk by CBC scored
Zach Smith, giving the Owls a 3-0 lead to start off the game.
The Owls added two more in the third inning with a Doherty sacrifice fly scoring
Brady Owen and an error scoring
Russell Strilchuk.
CBC finally got on the board in the bottom of the third with an RBI double down the left field line, bringing the score to 5-1.
CBC's second error of the game resulted in another run for the Owls, this time scoring
Isaiah Gibbs in the fourth.
In the bottom of the fifth, CBC had two more cross home plate with RBI singles, bringing the game to 6-3.
Owen added the Owls' seventh run of the game on a stolen base in the sixth inning, and Strilchuk hit his third home run of the season in the top of the seventh to secure the Owls 8-3 win.
Taran Oulton (3-7) pitched the complete game win. He struck out seven in the seven-inning game.
The Owls grabbed 12 hits on the game with four players having a multi-hit game. Doherty closed out the game with three RBI.
Game Two
WWU struck first again in the second part of the doubleheader. After three quick innings, Strilchuk doubled in the top of the fourth to score
Chase Gibson.
In the bottom of the inning, CBC tied it up with a lead-off home run over the left field fence.
In the seventh and eighth innings, CBC added eight runs including a three-run home run.
The Owls scored one in the top of the ninth on a
Tim Redford RBI groundout, but the third out ended the game with a 9-2 loss.
The Owls were held to just five hits in game two.
Adam Grunden (1-3) was credited with the loss. He started on the mound and pitched 6.1 innings.
