ST. LOUIS, Mo. –The William Woods University softball team split with Missouri Baptist University in their ninth conference series of the season. In extra innings, the Owls came out victorious in game one, 3-2, but dropped game two, 6-4.
The Owls move to 15-20 on the season with an 8-10 conference mark.
The Owls continue conference play with a doubleheader at Lindenwood University-Belleville on Saturday, April 13, at 1 p.m.
Game One
The Owls struck first with an
Alli Massey sacrifice fly to score
Anna Counts in the top of the first.
Neither team was able to score again over the next four innings, and the Owls forced MBU to leave six runners stranded.
In the bottom of the sixth, MBU tied up the game with a sacrifice fly.
The Owls took back the lead with a
Lindy Wilson RBI single down the right field line to score
Emma Walker, but MBU countered with an RBI double in the bottom of the inning to force the game into extra innings.
In the top of the eighth with two outs, Counts was walked.
Ari Arnold then hit an RBI double to the right-center field fence to score Counts and give the Owls a 3-2 lead.
In the bottom of the inning, MBU loaded up the bases with two outs, but
Madison Ausfahl struck out the final batter to end the game with a 3-2 win.
Brittany Roady (9-6) started in the circle and was credited with the win. She pitched seven innings and struck out seven. Ausfahl (1) closed out the game with a save.
Walker and Arnold each finished with two hits.
Game Two
MBU started off the scoring in the bottom of the first with a home run on the over the left field fence. They added two more in the second on an RBI triple and a sacrifice squeeze to take a 3-0 lead.
In the top of the third, Massey hit an RBI single to left field to score Arnold.
MBU added another run in the fourth with an RBI single to take a 4-1 lead.
In the top of the fifth, Wilson hit a two RBI double to the right-center field fence to score Arnold and Walker, cutting the game to 4-3, but MBU countered with two runs of their own in the bottom of the inning to take a 6-3 lead.
The Owls added one more in the sixth with a Walker RBI double to deep left field, bringing home Counts for the Owls' fourth run.
The Owls were unable to get home again in the rest of the sixth and the seventh, ending the game with a 6-4 loss.
The Owls outhit MBU 11-8. Walker went 3-for-4 from the plate with two doubles, one RBI and a run scored. Arnold went 3-for-4 from the plate with two runs scored.
Ausfahl (6-11) pitched the complete game and was credited with the loss. She struck out five.
