BELLEVILLE, Ill. – The William Woods University softball team split with Lindenwood University-Belleville Saturday afternoon, dropping game one 5-3 before short-gaming the Lynx in game two, 11-3. The Owls move to 16-21 on the season with a 9-11 conference mark.
Up next for the Owls is the rescheduled doubleheader versus Harris-Stowe State University. Originally scheduled as an away contest, the Owls will host the Hornets at 2 p.m. on Monday, April 15.
Game One
LUB scored two in the bottom of the second and added a third run in the third inning to take a 3-0 lead.
In the top of the fourth,
Alli Massey hit a one-out double to center field. The next batter popped out, putting
Emily Robinett at the plate with two outs and a runner on second. Robinett singled to left field, bringing home Massey.
Devyn Burton singled next, moving Robinett to third, but LUB grabbed the final out to end the inning.
LUB scored a run in the fifth and another in the sixth to take a 5-1 lead.
In the top of the seventh,
Chyann Hockett was hit by a pitch.
Anna Counts started the bats for the Owls with a one-out double to deep right center, moving Hockett to third.
Ari Arnold then singled to center field, scoring Hockett and moving Counts to third.
Emma Walker followed with a single to center field to score Counts. LUB changed pitchers, and the defense recorded the final two outs to end the game with a 5-3 loss.
The Owls recorded 10 hits in the game with three players recording two each.
Madison Ausfahl (6-12) pitched the complete game and struck out two.
Game Two
LUB struck first again in game two, taking a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second on a two RBI single.
The Owls countered with nine runs in the top of the third. Following Arnold's single, Walker hit a two-run home run over the center field fence to tie the game. The Owls loaded up the bases with just one out, and Ausfahl singled to center field to bring in Massey. Burton then singled to score
Lindy Wilson. A pitching change did no good for LUB as they walked in the next run to give the Owls a 5-2 lead. After going through the entire line up, Counts was back at the plate for a sacrifice fly to score Ausfahl. Arnold singled to score Burton, and Walker hit a double to bring home
Dacrie Depping and Arnold to take a 9-2 lead. LUB finally grabbed the final out to end the Owls' powerful inning.
LUB scored one in the fifth on a passed ball to bring the game to 9-3.
The Owls scored two more in the sixth to have the option to end the game an inning early. They loaded the bases with three consecutive singles, and with the fourth single, Ausfahl brought home
Kaitlyn Jennings. LUB recorded their first out, but Depping followed with a single to left field, scoring Wilson. A double play ended the inning.
The Owls kept LUB from scoring in the bottom of the inning, ending the game an inning early with an 11-3 win.
The Owls outhit LUB 15-6. Walker went 3-for-4 with a home run, a double, four RBI and one run scored. Arnold went 3-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored. The Owls had three others with two hits apiece.
Brittany Roady (10-6) grabbed the complete game win. She pitched six innings and struck out two.
