FULTON, Mo. – William Woods University Softball dropped a two-game series to RV Columbia Tuesday afternoon. The Cougars took the first game 12-0 in a 5-inning contest and 6-1 in the second. WWU now sits at 14-19 overall and 7-9 in the AMC.
The Owls return to action Friday, Apr. 2, as they travel to St. Louis, Mo. for a two-game series against Missouri Baptist. First pitch is set for 2 p.m.
Game One
Columbia opened the contest swinging. Midway through the first-inning, Olivia Denslow found her way to home plate thanks to a Molly Carter single down left center field. The run put CC ahead 1-0.
William Woods attempted to respond but fell short and would remain behind 1-0.
In the top of the second, the Cougars were able to add four more runs to their lead. Halfway through the inning, Avgustina Arbova was able to score the second run for CC thanks to a sacrifice fly to left field. Karolina Arbova and Denslow also reach home plate on the sacrifice fly. With a 4-0 lead, Molly Carter was able to push it to 5-0 on a batted ball down single right field.
After three scoreless innings, William Woods found themselves in a deeper hole in the top of the fourth. Carter and Natalie Dummit stretched the Columbia lead to 7-0 when Jacey Meyer double deep down center field.
A three up-three down inning for the Owls left them behind 7-0 going into the top of the fifth.
After a hot start to the contest, the Cougars continued swinging. They were able to score five runs in the top of the fifth-inning to give them a 12-0 victory.
Game Two
After taking game one of the two-game series, Columbia continued their momentum in the second game. Towards the end of the first-inning, Carter was able to put the first run of the contest on the board and give CC a 1-0 lead.
William Woods continued to struggle in the bottom of the inning and remained down 1.
It would not be until the top of the third-inning that another run was scored. Denslow was able to reach home courtesy of a Carter double down deep left-center field. The run pushed the Cougars ahead 2-0.
After going scoreless in the first game, William Woods was finally able to score their first run of the night.
Bri Devellano reached home plate thanks to a sacrifice fly and put the Owls down 2-1.
Columbia College immediately responded to the WWU run when Dummit hit a grand slam to deep left field. The batted ball brought home all four runners and gave the Cougars a comfortable 6-1 lead.
Neither team scored another run in the remaining innings and Columbia would go on to win 6-1.
