FULTON, Mo. – The William Woods University volleyball team forced No. 17 Central Methodist University to four sets. The loss is the first of the season for the Owls, bringing them to 1-1 on the year.
The Owls grabbed a set two 25-16 win after falling to CMU 25-17 in set one, but CMU went on to win sets three and four, 25-17 and 25-22.
Game Flow
CMU pushed out an 11-4 lead in set one after a 5-0 run. Following four consecutive CMU errors, the Owls wiggled their way back into the set. With an ace from
Remie Johnson and a block from
Kate Doerhoff, the Owls trailed by just one, 14-13. CMU pushed their lead out to seven late in the set. A kill from Doerhoff paused CMU's 5-0 run, but CMU ended the set with two kills, 25-17.
The Owls forced CMU to hit negative in set two with their seven blocks while hitting a game-high .231. Three points into the set, the Owls blasted a 6-0 run to take a 9-3 lead. The Owls maintained their advantage and pushed out a 14-6 lead halfway through with the help of three blocks from the net. CMU brought the set within four, 17-13, but the Owls blazed an 8-3 run to close out the set with a 25-16 win.
The tables turned in set three, and CMU took an early 11-5 lead. The Owls were unable to recover from the early deficit and fell 25-17.
CMU looked for the win after doubling the Owls' score early in set four, 10-5, but the Owls powered back with a 5-0 run to even it out. CMU held on to the lead until kills from Doerhoff and Johnson aided in a 3-0 run to take a 20-18 lead. CMU answered back with a 4-0 run before an
Ally Konarzewski kill brought the Owls back in the game, 22-21. CMU blocked the next WWU attack, forcing the Owls to call a timeout; CMU scored their 24
th point coming out of the timeout.
Nise Salima slammed down a kill to bring the score to 24-22, but CMU ended the set and match with a kill, 25-22.
