Owls Volleyball Tops Benedictine, 3-1

FULTON, Mo. – The William Woods University volleyball team grabbed a 3-1 win over Benedictine (Kan.) Wednesday afternoon, moving the Owls to 2-1 on the season.

The Owls won in four sets: 25-17, 25-19, 27-29, 25-19.

The Owls and Benedictine played even to start the match, but a 6-0 run midway through set one gave the Owls an 18-12 advantage. BC cut the set to four, but a kill from Hannah Kuehl started a 3-0 run to give the Owls a 22-15 lead. Nise Salima ended the set with a kill to win it 25-17.
 
Set two was close with BC holding a slight lead through most of it. Back-to-back kills from Kate Doerhoff and Kuehl gave the Owls a one-point lead, and following a BC attack error that put the Owls up by two, BC called a timeout. The Owls came back with an ace to take a 17-14 lead. The Owls pushed it to an eight-point lead with a 6-0 run. A kill from Ally Konarzewski brought set two to set point, and the Owls grabbed the win on a BC service error, 25-19.
 
The Owls looked to clinch the match in just three sets, but Benedictine forced set three into extra points and came out with a 29-27 win. After facing a 6-3 deficit, the Owls came back with a 7-2 run to take a 13-11 lead. BC and WWU remained neck-and-neck, and after back-to-back-to-back kills from Nise Salima, Doerhoff and Jaclyn Zahn to take a 21-19 lead, BC called a timeout. BC came out of the timeout with a 4-1 run to take a 23-22 lead. Doerhoff and Tess Schannuth hit two consecutive kills to bring it to set point, but BC responded with two points of their own to take a 25-24 lead. Kills by Doerhoff and Konarzewski put the Owls back up by one, 26-25, but BC smashed down a kill to even the score once again. Another kill from Konarzewski put the Owls up by one, but three consecutive points from BC ended the set with an Owls' loss.
 
Set four followed suit of the other three sets, remaining neck-and-neck until Zahn put down back-to-back kills to jumpstart a 7-1 run that put the Owls up 18-11. Two BC errors put the Owls up by seven, 20-13. BC struck a 5-1 run to bring the set within three points, but two more BC errors gave the Owls a 23-18 lead. A kill from Salima brought the set to match point, and Emma Doherty served up an ace to end the match with a win.

.583 – Jaclyn Zahn hit .583 on the night with seven kills and no errors on 12 attempts.
27 – Remie Johnson recorded a double-double with 27 assists and 10 digs.
17 – Kayton Coffee dug up a floor-high 17 digs and recorded three service aces.
12 – Katie Doerhoff recorded a floor-high 12 kills.
11 – Ally Konarzewski dug up 11 digs, Nise Salima put down 11 kills, and Tess Schannuth assisted in 11 of the Owls' kills.
