FULTON, Mo. – William Woods University Women's Soccer captured their first victory of 2019 season Saturday afternoon as they defeated the College of Saint Mary's (Neb.) 2-0.
McKenzie Gourley scired both goals in the contest.
With 20-minutes remaining the first half of play
Alexis Willingham was able to find Gourley for her first goal of the game. Seconds later Gourley would break free for her second goal of the day and give WWU a 2-0 lead over the flames.
After breaking out ahead, William Woods forward Taylor LePage attempted to give the Owls their third goal, but her shot would miss wide. She went on to lead WWU with 9 shot attempts with four attempts being on goal.
The College of Saint Mary's looked to respond to the quick WWU run when Sara Kraenow attempted a shot that missed wide of the goal. Minutes later, Sarah Anderson attempted a shot for the Flames but would miss high of the goal.
With 3-minutes remaining in the half,
Savannah Smith looked to increase the WWU lead, but her attempted was saved by College of Saint Mary's goalkeeper Corryne Millett.
A Flames corner-kick ended the half and the Owls remained ahead 2-0.
The College of Saint Mary's returned from halftime ready to attack. 6-minutes into action Kaylie Ratzlaff looked to give the Flames their first goal; but her shot attempt missed high of the goal and they would remain behind 2-0.
At the 35-minute mark, Gourley looked for her second goal of the night but put too much power behind the ball as it missed wide of the goal. 20-seconds later, LePage attempted a shot on goal that was saved by Millett.
The Flames attempted to make a comeback but could not get around the WWU defense. William Woods went on to win the contest 2-0.
