Owls Upset No. 9 Freed-Hardeman

FULTON, Mo. – The William Woods University women's basketball team opened their home portion of the 2020 schedule with a huge upset over ninth-ranked Freed-Hardeman University Thursday evening, 70-69. The win improves the Owls to 11-4 on the season with a 6-4 conference mark.

The Owls had three players score in double digits in the win.

The Owls host Williams Baptist University on Saturday, Jan. 11, at 1 p.m.

By The Numbers
1.1 – Peyton Greenlee drained the winning three-pointer with 1.1 seconds left on the clock. 
46.6 – The Owls shot 46.6 percent from the field with a 52 FG percentage in the first half.
18 – Rylie Cox scored a team-high 18 points while going 7-for-9 from the field.
16 – Kaycee Gerald added 16 points to the win.
9 – Gerald pulled down a team-high nine boards with eight coming from the defensive end. 
5 – Gerald recorded all five of the Owls' steals and dished in a team-high four assists.

Game Flow
The Owls pushed a four-point lead to start the game, 8-4. FHU brought the game within one three times over the next four minutes, and with a three with 2:01 on the clock, FHU took their first lead of the game, 14-12.

Carleigh Jenkins answered back with a three from the top of the key to send the game into the second quarter with the Owls leading by one, 15-14.

A three from Peyton Greenlee began the second quarter, giving the Owls a four-point lead, 18-14.

FHU returned with a 5-0 run to take a one-point lead, but Kaycee Gerald sunk a long jumper to take back the lead. 

After two more lead changes, FHU took hold of the lead and ran with it. They pushed their lead to five with 4:18 to play in the half. 

Four points from Gerald brought the Owls within two with 55 seconds on the clock, but FHU scored the final four points of the half to send the teams into the locker room with FHU leading by six, 39-33.

FHU came out of halftime and through the first four minutes of play they extended the Owls' deficit to 11, 49-38.

Two fast breaks following Gerald's steals helped bring the Owls within five, but FHU answered by pushing back out by 11. 

In the final 2:55 of the third quarter, the Owls dominated a 9-0 run to cut the game to three with 10 minutes to play.

Just over halfway through the final quarter, Rylie Cox hit a three to bring the Owls within two, 64-62.

FHU quickly went back up by four, but a three from Jazlyn Drake from the top of the key brought the game within one with 2:21 to play.

Cox was fouled on a fast break lay up following a Gerald steal, sending her to the line for two. With two good free throws, the Owls came within one with 54 seconds to play.

With nine seconds on the clock and the ball on the Owls' side of the court, the Owls burned their final two timeouts while trying to get the ball in bounds. On the third attempt, Greenlee passed it in to Jazlyn Drake at the top of the key who quickly dished it back out to Greenlee on the wing, and with a wide-open shot, Greenlee drained the three with 1.1 seconds on the clock to pull ahead by two, 70-68.

FHU immediately called a timeout and got the ball in bounds down on their end. While taking the final shot on the wing with .8 seconds on the clock, FHU was fouled and sent to the line. FHU made the first to bring the game within one, 70-69. They missed the second, and Ashleigh Frampton pulled down the rebound to secure the Owls' upset over No. 9 Freed-Hardeman.
