NEVADA, Mo. – The William Woods University softball team split with Cottey College Sunday afternoon. The Owls dropped game one 10-8, but bounced back with an eight-inning game two 5-1 win. The Owls move to 2-5 on the season.
The Owls next face Evangel (Mo.) on Monday, Feb. 17, for a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.
Game One
CC got on the board first as they put up five runs in the bottom of the second. They added one more in the third to take a 6-0 lead.
WWU put up four in the top of the fifth.
Bri Devellano scored the first run off
Sydney Wilbeck's RBI single to left field.
Lindy Wilson scored on a CC error, and Wilbeck scored on
Celeste Sermeno's RBI single to center field.
Anna Counts scored the final run of the inning on
Abbi Pringer's RBI single to center field.
CC added three in the bottom of the inning to take a 9-4 lead.
WWU scored two in the sixth to cut the game to 9-6. In the bottom of the inning, CC scored on a sacrifice fly.
The Owls looked to come back following a one-out two-run home run from
Madison Ausfahl, but two fly outs following ended the game.
Pringer went 2-for-4 from the plate with a run scored and one RBI.
Mychael Jett (1-1) was credited with the loss. She pitched 5.2 innings and struck out one.
Game Two
Game two remained scoreless through five innings. In the bottom of the sixth, CC scored on three hits.
Lindy Wilson hit a game-tying solo shot in the top of the seventh to put the Owls on the board and even the score. The Owls were unable to score again, sending the game into the bottom of the inning.
The Owls' defense ended the bottom of the seventh with a two runners in scoring position with a double play to send the game into extra innings.
With the international tie breaker rule, WWU started with a runner on second.
Kenzie Ausfahl bunted, and
Emma Taylor scored on the throwing error to take a 2-1 lead. With bases loaded, Sermeno hit a two RBI single to score K. Ausfahl and Pringer.
Annika Ramon pinch ran for
Madison Ausfahl and scored on an error, giving the Owls a 5-1 lead.
The Owls' defense held CC scoreless in the bottom of the inning despite bases loaded to end the game with a 5-1 win.
Sermeno was 2-for-4 from the plate with two RBI.
Brittany Roady (1-1) was credited with the complete game win. She pitched 8.0 innings and struck out 11 while allowing just one earned run.
