Owls Go 0-3 at Gulf Coast Invitational

GULF SHORES, Ala. – The William Woods University softball team played three games at the Gulf Coast Invitational Friday to close out their spring break trip. The Owls went 0-3 on the day to bring their overall record to 7-11.

The Owls continue on the road with a doubleheader at Avila on Tuesday, March 10.
 
Brenau (Ga.) defeated William Woods, 8-4
BU took an early 2-0 lead with a two RBI double in the bottom of the first.
 
The Owls scored one in the bottom of the second with an error to bring the game to 2-1.
 
In the bottom of the inning, GU added three more runs with an error and two RBI doubles to take a 5-1 lead.
 
Emma Taylor led off the top of the fourth with a double and moved to third on Lindy Wilson's sacrifice bunt. She was brought home on Celeste Sermeno's RBI single to score the second run. Taylor Bell gave the Owls their third run of the game on Anna Counts' RBI fielder's choice.
 
GU countered with two runs of their own in the bottom of the inning with an RBI triple and an RBI single to extend their lead to 7-3. They added one more in the sixth on an RBI double to take an 8-3 lead.
 
Ally Mahoney smashed a home run in the top of the seventh to plate the Owls' fourth run of the game. Hanna Knipp, Taylor and Bell followed with back-to-back-back singles to load the bases with two outs, but a fly out ended the game with three runners stranded.
 
Taylor went 2-for-2 from the plate with a run scored. Knipp and Bell went 2-for-3 from the plate with a run scored.
 
Mychael Jett (2-4) pitched the complete game and was credited with the loss. She struck out five while allowing five earned runs.


No. 8 Mobile (Ala.) defeated William Woods, 11-4
Mobile took a 2-0 lead in the top of the second.
 
In the bottom of the third, Regan Wilde reached on a one-out walk. She moved to second on Celeste Sermeno's ground out and scored on Anna Counts' RBI double. Abbi Pringer singled to move Counts to third, and both scored on Devyn Burton's two RBI double to take a 3-2 lead.
 
After two errors early in the top of the fourth, Mobile put up five runs to go back in the lead. They added four more in the fifth to take an 11-3 lead.
 
The Owls loaded up the bases with one out in the bottom of the fifth with a single from Burton, a double from Ally Mahoney and a walk for Bell. Jessi Butler hit a single to bring home Burton and move everyone a base, giving the Owls their fourth run of the game.
 
The Owls were unable to score again in the remaining two innings, ending the game with an 11-4 loss.
 
The Owls recorded eight hits with four doubles. Burton went 2-for-4 from the plate with a double and two RBI. Pringer went 2-for-4 from the plate with a double and a run scored.
 
Brittany Roady (3-2) was credited with the loss. She pitched 5.0 innings and struck out three while allowing five earned runs. Madison Ausfahl came in as relief and face seven batters in the final 2.0 innings.


Thomas (Ga.) defeated William Woods, 6-4
Thomas plated two runs in the top of the first to take an early 2-0 lead.

The Owls evened the score in the bottom of the inning with a two RBI double from Devyn Burton to score Sermeno and Counts. Burton then scored the go-ahead run on Bri Devellano's RBI single, giving the Owls a 3-2 lead.

The Owls scored their fourth run in the bottom of the second on an error, taking a 4-2 lead.

In the top of the fifth, Thomas scored two runs to even the score. In the top of the sixth, they scored two more to take a 6-4 lead.

The Owls were unable to bring another runner home, ending the game with a 6-4 loss.

The Owls laced up nine hits. Burton went 3-for-4 from the plate with a double, two RBI and a run scored. Hanna Knipp and Anna Counts each went 2-for-4 from the plate. 

Alexis  Hassler (1-3) pitched 5.1 innings and struck out four while allowing two earned runs. Madison Ausfahl pitched the remaining 1.2 innings and struck out two.
