Owls Rally in Bottom of the Ninth For Walk-Off Win

FULTON, Mo. ­– The William Woods University baseball team rallied for eight runs in the bottom of the ninth to close out the three-game series with a walk-off win over Central Baptist College Saturday afternoon. The Owls won the series 2-1, bringing them to 9-9 on the season with a 2-7 conference mark.
 
CBC hit a two-out, two-run shot over the left-center field fence in the top of the first to take a 2-0 lead. They punched a second homer over the left-center field fence in the top of the third, and they added a fourth run in the top of the fourth on a RBI single.
 
In the top of the eighth, CBC once again smashed a two-run shot over the left-center field fence to take a 6-0 lead.
 
The Owls were held to just three hits through eight innings of play.
 
CBC tacked on one more run in the top of the ninth with a RBI double to left field to take a 7-0 lead.
 
In the bottom of the ninth, Isaiah Gibbs led off with a walk. He moved to second on Alex Owens' single, and Chase Gibson loaded the bases with a single through the hole at shortstop. Connor Poulson was walked, plating the Owls' first run of the game. Bryson Matthews was then hit by a pitch to bring in the second run, and Jordan Smith smashed a double to deep right-center field to clear the bases.
 
Smith was brought home on Marcus Gonzalez's single, and Gonzalez plated the tying run on Easton Wallace's single to right-center.
 
After a pitching change for CBC, they recorded their second out. Alex Wimer came in to pinch run for Wallace, and Owens was back at the plate. Owens walked, putting two runners on for Gibson. Gibson smacked a single just over shortstop's head to bring home Wimer for the winning run.
 
The Owls put together six hits in the ninth, finishing the day with nine.
 
Smith went 2-for-3 from the plate with two doubles, two RBI and a run scored. Owens and Gibson also had two hits from the plate.
 
Levi Fortner (1-0) gets the credit for the win since he was the last pitcher of record. Dylan Hansen started on the mound and tossed 3.1 innings. Allan Brown threw 4.2 innings and struck out four while allowing just two hits and two runs.
 
The Owls host Park University for a doubleheader on Tuesday, March 10. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
