Owls Fall in Final Minutes to WBU

FULTON, Mo. – The William Woods University men's basketball team fell in the final two minutes to Williams Baptist University in the conference-opener, 61-59. The Owls fall to 0-3 on the season. 
 
The Owls next end their home stretch on Saturday, Jan. 9, as they host Harris-Stowe State University at 3 p.m.
 
By The Numbers
15 – Spencer Yoggerst went 6-for-9 from the field for a team-high 15 points.
10 – Andrew Nett added 10 points to the board.
8 – Codi Whitlock pulled down a team-high eight rebounds.
5 – Makenzie Fessler dished in five assists.
3 – Darius Yohe blocked three shots, bringing him to five to tie the career record, six to break.
 
Game Flow
WBU scored first, but the Owls quickly evened the score. The Owls remained one step behind despite tying the game up five times. Makenzie Fessler broke the Owls' three-minute silence with a put-back with 11:24 on the clock, giving the Owls their first lead of the game, 14-12.
 
The Owls pushed out a six-point lead with 7:21 to play, and Spencer Yoggerst hit back-to-back buckets to extend the Owls' lead to eight after WBU cut the game to four. The Owls scored the final points of the half with two good free throws from Ian Hodges to head into the break with a 32-26 lead.
 
Fessler kicked off the second half with a three to bring the Owls to a nine-point lead. WBU drained back-to-back threes to cut the game to three, but two fast break jumpers by Andrew Nett following his steals helped put the Owls up by 10 with 14:13 to play.
 
WBU managed to bring the game within two with 10:12 on the clock, but Yoggerst hit a three on the next possession to put the Owls back up by five. He followed with two points, and Hodges put the Owls back up by 10 with a three with 6:52 on the clock.
 
WBU dominated the Owls over the next four and a half minutes, outscoring the team 14-3 to take a one-point lead with 2:17 to play. 
 
Yoggerst tied the game back up with a free throw in bonus, and a good free throw from Fessler in double bonus put the Owls up by one with 40 seconds remaining. 
 
With 19 seconds, WBU hit a bucket down low to take a one-point lead. The Owls fouled to stop the clock with 4 seconds on the clock, sending WBU to the line. They went 1-for-2, taking a two-point lead to win it, 61-59.
