FULTON, Mo. – The William Woods University women's volleyball team opened the 2021 spring season with a five-set loss to receiving votes MidAmerica Nazarene University.
The set scores were: 26-28, 25-20, 25-21, 20-25, 8-15.
The Owls next play in a triangular at Columbia College on Tuesday, Feb. 23. They first face William Penn at 6 p.m., followed by a match versus host No. 25 Columbia at 8 p.m.

Game Flow
The two teams were neck-and-neck throughout the first set. The Owls led 22-20 near the end, but MNU scored three straight to take a one-point lead. The Owls countered with two to go up 24-23, but MNU evened the score. MNU next took a 26-25 lead, but an attack error evened the score at 26-26. MNU ended the extended set with a 28-26 win.
The Owls hit a 5-0 run near the start of set two to take a 7-4 lead. Two kills from
Hannah Kuehl and a MNU attack error extended the Owls' lead to 10-5. MNU slowly inched back into the set, and eventually took the 16-15 lead after an 8-2 run. The Owls sat up 22-19, and
Kate Doerhoff and
Faith McQueen ended the set with a three-point run to win 25-20.
MNU started set three with a 4-0 run, but the Owls countered with a 4-0 run of their own to even the score. Shortly after,
Tess Schannuth jump started a 7-0 run with a kill. MNU cut the set to 14-11 and eventually took a one-point lead, 20-19. The Owls closed out the set with a 5-0 run featuring three kills by
Ally Konarzewski and a block by Kuehl and Schannuth. The Owls took a 2-1 match lead with the 25-21 win.
MNU pushed out a 10-5 lead in set four and extended it to a 17-9 advantage. The Owls managed to bring it within three with a middle of the set 7-2 run, 20-17. MNU closed out the set with a 25-20 win to even the match and force a fifth set.
MNU jumped out to a 9-2 lead in the deciding set. The Owls hit a 4-1 run to close the set to 10-6, but MNU ended it with a 15-8 loss for the Owls.
