Baseball Opens Season with Devastating Loss

VERSAILLES, Mo. – The William Woods University baseball team opened the 2021 season with a devastating bottom of the seventh walkoff loss Friday afternoon. The Owls fell 8-7 in the bottom of the seventh following a three-run walkoff homerun to receiving votes Bellevue in the CMU Series.
 
The Owls return to action Saturday at 11 a.m. as they take on Olivet Nazarene in day two of the CMU Series.

The Owls quickly got on the board as Jordan Smith led off the game with a home run over the right field fence on just a 1-0 count. The team added a second run in the top of the third with a two out Marcus Gonzalez home run over the left field fence. 
 
In the top of the fourth, the Owls loaded up the bases with just one out following two walks. They then took a 3-0 lead with a Tyklen Salmons RBI fielder's choice to score Zach Krause
 
Bellevue plated their first run of the game in the bottom of the inning with a home run over center field. With bases loaded and two outs, Owls' pitcher Logan Bexten struck out the final batter to leave the game at 3-1 heading into the fifth inning.
 
Isaiah Gibbs hit a one-out double in the top of the sixth and scored on Alex Owen's RBI single to left field to put the Owls up 4-1. 
 
Bellevue scored their second run in the bottom of the inning to bring the game to 4-2.
 
In the top of the seventh, the Owls plated three runs. Jack Niggemeier led off the inning with a home run over the center field fence on a 3-2 count. Two batters later, Smith crossed home plate on Marcus Gonzalez's RBI double. Gonzalez then scored on Krause's RBI double to left to take up a 7-2 lead.
 
In the bottom of the seventh, Bellevue had to plate six runs to walk away with the win, and they did just that. They plated three runs on a double, a sacrifice fly and a fielder's choice to bring the game to 7-5. With two outs, Bellevue's Josh Vaughan hit a three-run walkoff over the left field fence on a 0-0 count to win it.
