MACK'S CREEK, Mo. – The William Woods University softball team swept Bacone (Okla.) Saturday afternoon to improve to 3-1 on the season. The Owls had a come-from-behind 7-2 win in game one, and a grand slam from
Arianna Donovan in the first inning of game two gave way for a 9-3 win.
The Owls return to play on Wednesday, March 3, at Evangel University. The rescheduled doubleheader is set to start at 1 p.m.
Game One
Bacone plated one run in the fourth on a sacrifice fly and took a 2-0 lead in the top of the sixth with an RBI single.
The Owls rallied for seven runs in the bottom of the sixth to take up a 7-2 lead.
Taylor Bell hit a one-out double to move
Lindy Wilson to third. Wilson then scored on Donovan's single.
Katie Gaus scored the game-tying run on a wild pitch, and
Sydney Wilbeck plated the go-ahead run on
Mia Santos' RBI single.
Celeste Sermeno brought home
Alexis Hassler with her RBI single, and Sermeno scored on
Emma Taylor's RBI double to give the Owls a 5-2 lead.
Jaden Swift was brought home with
Hanna Knipp's RBI ground out to first, and Taylor scored on Wilson's RBI single to give the Owls a 7-2 advantage.
Alexis Hassler (2-0) pitched the complete game win. Through 7.0 innings, she tossed seven strikeouts, walked one and allowed just two earned runs.
Game Two
Bacone took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first on two RBI doubles.
In the bottom of the first, the Owls loaded up the bases. Hassler hit an RBI single to bring home Taylor to plate the Owls' first run. Donovan then came up and smashed a grand slam, clearing the bases and giving the Owls a 5-2 lead.
Gaus hit a one-out triple in the bottom of the second and was brought home on
Mallory Feldewerth's RBI single to give the Owls a 6-2 advantage.
Bacone plated one in the third following a lead-off triple, cutting the game to 6-3.
In the bottom of the third, the Owls plated two on a sacrifice bunt error and a fielder's choice.
The Owls added one more run to the board in the fifth as Taylor's RBI double brought home Wilbeck to give the Owls a 9-3 win.
Kalee Wall (1-1) pitched the complete game win. She threw one strikeout in the win.
Donovan finished with four RBI.
