FULTON, Mo. – The William Woods University softball team was swept by Briar Cliff University Wednesday afternoon. The Owls dropped game one 1-0 and game two 8-2. They move to 5-7 on the season.
The team is set to play a doubleheader at Missouri Valley College on Thursday, March 11, starting at 1 p.m.
Game One
BCU plated the lone run of the game in the third inning on an RBI single to center field.
The Owls looked to even the score in the bottom of the fifth.
Ally Mahoney started the inning with a single to left field and was advanced with
Bri Devellano's sacrifice bunt. She moved to third on
Alexis Hassler's single up the middle but was left stranded as the third out came on a ground out.
Hassler (4-2) pitched the complete game and struck out five.
Game Two
WWU got on the board early as
Arianna Donovan plated
Jaden Swift in the bottom of the first on an RBI single to right-center field.
After a scoreless second inning, BCU evened the score in the third inning as the Owls walked in the tying run.
BCU took a 2-1 lead in the fourth on an RBI single to the outfield. They scored three runs in the fifth, one in the sixth and two more in the seventh to take an 8-1 lead.
In the bottom of the seventh with two outs,
Devyn Burton hit a single up the middle to score
Lindy Wilson. The Owls were unable to plate another run, ending with an 8-2 loss.
Swift went 2-4 from the plate with one run scored.
Kalee Wall (1-2) started in the circle. She pitched 4.2 innings and struck out three while allowing three earned runs on five hits.
