Home Run Party in Game One, Owls Split with WBU

WALNUT RIDGE, Ark. – The William Woods University softball team opened the 2021 American Midwest Conference season with a split at Williams Baptist University. The Owls short-gamed the Eagles in game one after scoring 10 runs off home runs, 11-1. In game two, the Owls were short-gamed, 9-1.
 
The Owls are slated to host Stephens College for their second conference doubleheader on Tuesday, March 23. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
 
Game One
The Owls scored 10 of their 11 runs of game one on home runs. 
 
Emma Taylor led off the game with a homer over the left field fence on just the third pitch of the game. In the top of the second, Alexis Hassler led off with a home run over the center field fence on the first pitch.
 
The Owls took up a 10-0 lead in the third as they plated eight runs. Arianna Donovan hit the Owls' third home run of the game with a three-run dinger over the left field fence. After two more runners got on base, Ally Mahoney hit a three-run homer over the center field fence. A pitching change and a walk later, Taylor bombed her second homer of the game again over the left field fence.
 
WBU scored their lone run in the fourth inning on a RBI single to left field.
 
The Owls added one more run to their score in the fifth with a Mallory Feldewerth RBI single to center field.
 
Taylor went 3-4 from the plate with two home runs and three RBI. Donovan and Mahoney each recorded a home run and three RBI.
 
Alexis Hassler (5-2) pitched the complete game win. She allowed just five hits through five innings while tossing three strikeouts.
 
 
Game Two
The Owls plated their only run of the game in the top of the first. They loaded the bases with just one out, and Devyn Burton hit a sacrifice fly to center field, bringing home Taylor. 
 
WBU scored six in the bottom of the inning with two home runs and a RBI single.
 
They added two more in the fourth on a two RBI double to take an 8-1 lead.
 
They scored their final run needed to end the game in five innings on a RBI triple to deep left-center field, 9-1.
 
Ashlyn Towery (0-4) was credited with the loss in the circle. Kalee Wall came in as relief and pitched the remaining 4.2 innings.
