Owls Baseball Splits with MBU in Conference-Opener

O'FALLON, Mo. – The William Woods University baseball team opened the 2021 conference season with a split versus Missouri Baptist University. The Owls held on for a game one 4-3 win. They came back in the bottom of the ninth in game two to force extra innings but fell in the 10th inning, 6-5.
 
The Owls move to 8-4 on the season with a 1-1 conference mark.
 
The Owls finish the four-game conference series with Missouri Baptist on Monday, March 22. The doubleheader begins at 1 p.m. at Owls Field.  
 
 
Game One
MBU took an early 1-0 lead on a RBI single up the middle.
 
WWU took the lead in the bottom of the second on a two-run homer by Bryson Matthews. Isaiah Gibbs crossed home plate on the play after hitting a one-out double to right field.
 
MBU tied the game in the top of the third with a lead-off homerun.
 
In the bottom of the inning, WWU again took the lead with a Chase Gibson RBI single to score Jordan Smith. Gibbs scored his second run of the game to give the Owls a 4-2 lead in the fourth. 
 
MBU scored one in the fifth on an error to bring the game to 4-3.
 
Logan Bexten (1-0) pitched the complete game win. He threw six strikeouts while tossing 7.0 innings. 
 
Game Two
MBU kicked off game two with a home run on just the second pitch of the game. They added a second run on a RBI double down the left field line.
 
WWU took the lead in the bottom of the inning with three runs. Gibbs brought home Smith and Gibson on a triple to the left-center field fence. He was brought home on Easton Wallace's double to right-center field on the next at bat. 
 
MBU evened the score by plating a run in the fifth on a RBI double, and they took the lead with another RBI double in the sixth.
 
Alex Owens hit a one-out RBI double to right-center field to score Tyklen Salmons, evening the score. MBU intentionally walked Smith after a second out, but he was left stranded as a fly out to right field forced an extra inning.
 
MBU scored two on a two RBI single over first base in the top of the 10th to take a 6-4 lead.
 
WWU scored one in the bottom of the 10th on a two-out wild pitch but a strikeout ended the game with a 6-5 loss. 
 
Wallace went 3-5 from the plate with one RBI. Gibbs recorded two hits, two RBI and two runs scored. Owens grabbed two hits at the plate with one RBI.
 
Andrew Fyffe (1-1) was credited with the loss on the mound. He pitched 1.0 innings. Owen Tripp started on the mound and tossed 6.1 innings with four strikeouts. Max Storch pitched 2.2 innings and struck out two.
