FULTON, Mo. – The William Woods University baseball team split against Missouri Baptist Monday afternoon, ending the four-game series with the Spartans 2-2.
The Owls put together a two-out rally in the bottom of the seventh of game one to plate five runs and win it in walk-off fashion, 9-8. After a rough start to game two, the Owls could not recover and lost 14-4 in seven innings.
The Owls move to 9-4 on the season with a 2-2 conference mark.
Game One
The Owls rallied for five runs on two outs in the bottom of the seventh to win game one of the second doubleheader series, 9-8. A hit by pitch and a walk put two runners on with two outs.
Isaiah Gibbs and
Easton Wallace hit RBI singles to plate
Alex Wimer and
Connor Poulson and cut the game to 8-6. Another walk loaded up the bases, and a MBU error brought in the Owls' seventh run.
Jack Niggemeier then singled just over second base to score
Easton Wallace for the tying run and
Bryson Matthews for the winning run.
Niggemeier plated the Owls' first run in the third inning on
Chase Gibson's RBI single up the middle after leading off the inning with a single just over second base.
Bryson Matthews plated the Owls' second run in the fourth on a two-out error.
In the top of the fifth, MBU hit a two RBI double to even the score at 2-2, but in the bottom of the inning, WWU plated two on a two RBI single by
Zach Krause to go up 4-2.
MBU's pinch hitter hit a three-run homer over the left field fence in the sixth to go up 5-4.
The Owls gave up three runs in the top of the seventh to put MBU up 8-4 before rallying in the bottom of the inning.
Kaleb Haley (2-0) was credited with the win. He pitched 1.0 innings.
Dylan Hansen started on the mound and pitched 4.2 innings with five strikeouts.
Max Storch came in as relief and pitched 1.1 inning with two strikeouts.
Niggemeier went 3-4 from the plate with two RBI and one run scored.
Game Two
MBU opened game two with four consecutive home runs to take a 5-0 lead after one inning of play. They added two more runs to the board in the second on their fifth home run of the game, 7-0.
In the bottom of the second, Gibbs scored on
Kamron Morriss' RBI single to center field.
In the bottom of the third, the Owls plated two more runs to cut the game to 7-3. Wimer scored on Wallace's RBI ground out, and
Marcus Gonzalez scored on
Zach Krause's RBI single to left field.
MBU added their eighth run in the top of the fourth on a sacrifice fly.
Niggemeier doubled down the left field line in the bottom of the inning on two outs to bring home Matthews, cutting the game to 8-4.
MBU strung six runs together through the next three innings to take a 14-4 lead.
The Owls left one runner stranded in the bottom of the seventh to close out game two early, 14-4.
Gibbs went 2-3 from the plate with two doubles and a run scored.
