Baseball Sweeps MVC

FULTON, Mo. – The William Woods University baseball team grabbed two wins over Missouri Valley College Saturday afternoon. The Owls won game one 5-4 and dominated game two with a 9-1 win.
 
The Owls finish out the four-game series with Missouri Valley on Sunday, March 7, with a doubleheader starting at 12 p.m.
 
 
Game One
WWU took an early 1-0 lead as Marcus Gonzalez scored on Chase Gibson's RBI double to deep right field in the first inning.
 
MVC evened the score in the third on a ground out RBI.
 
In the bottom of the fifth, the Owls added three more runs to take a 4-1 lead.  Gonzalez scored Jordan Smith off an RBI single, and Gonzalez crossed home plate on Gibson's RBI double to deep right field. Alex Wimer scored the third run of the inning on Zach Krause's RBI single to center field.
 
In the top of the sixth, MVC plated three to even the score at 4-4. After a pitching change, Andrew Fyffe struck the next batter out to end the inning.
 
In the bottom of the sixth, Alex Owens walked. He moved to second on a ground out, and got to third on a wild pitch. Jack Niggemeier then tapped a double to right field, bringing home Owens to take a 5-4 lead. Niggemeier moved to third on a balk but was left stranded as the final out came on a ground out.
 
The Owls left two runners stranded in scoring position the top of the seventh to pull out the 5-4 win. 
 
Fyffe (1-0) was credited with the win on the mound. He pitched the final 1.1 innings. Logan Bexten started on the mound. He pitched 5.2 innings and struck out four.
 
Gonzalez went 2-2 from the plate with two runs and one RBI. Gibson went 2-3 with two RBI, and Zach Krause went 2-3 with one RBI.
 
 
Game Two
MVC took a 1-0 lead in the second inning on an RBI single.
 
The Owls took up a 4-1 lead in the third. Zach Krause hit an RBI double to bring in Gonzalez for the tying run. Easton Wallace scored the go-ahead run on a passed ball, and Connor Poulson was brought home on a balk. Alex Owens brought home the final run of the inning with an RBI single to bring home Isaiah Gibbs.
 
They added four more runs in the fifth to take an 8-1 lead. Connor Poulson and Niggemeeir each scored on a wild pitch, and Niggemeier hit a two RBI single to left-center to score Gibbs and Alex Wimer.
 
The Owls added one more run in the bottom of the sixth with Poulson's RBI double to deep left-center field to score Gonzalez.
 
Kaleb Haley (1-0) grabbed the win on the mound. He pitched 2.0 innings. Owen Tripp (1) was credited with the save. He pitched 2.1 innings and struck out one.
