ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The William Woods University softball team dropped a pair of games to Missouri Baptist Thursday afternoon, 4-1 and 5-4. The Owls inched their way back in to game two, evening the score in the seventh inning but MBU scored the winning run in the bottom of the seventh. The Owls fall to 12-18 on the season with a 5-7 conference mark.
The Owls next host Lyon College for a doubleheader on Saturday, April 17, starting at 2 p.m.
Game One
MBU put up a run in the first inning on a RBI double to take a 1-0 lead. They added a run in the second on a RBI single, and put up two more in the third on a two-run homer over the center field fence.
The Owls plated their only run on
Celeste Sermeno's RBI double to the right field fence, bringing home
Katie Gaus.
The Owls were unable to score again, ending with a 4-1 loss.
Hanna Knipp and
Alexis Hassler each recorded two hits.
Hassler (8-8) pitched the complete game. She threw two strikeouts while allowing four runs.
Game Two
MBU quickly took a 3-0 lead after the first inning.
In the top of the second with two outs and a 2-2 count,
Ally Mahoney bombed the ball over the right field fence to cut the game to 3-1.
MBU countered with a leadoff home run in the bottom of the third, taking a 4-1 lead.
Sermeno hit a double to deep left-center field in the top of the fifth, moving
Mia Santos to third with one out.
Emma Taylor then hit a sacrifice fly, and Santos tagged up and came home.
In the top of the sixth,
Ally Mahoney advanced to third on Gaus' single up the middle. A bobble by the centerfielder allowed Mahoney to score the Owls' third run.
Taylor plated the equalizer run in the top of the seventh on Hassler's RBI single down the left field line, but the Owls were unable to bring Hassler home for the go-ahead run.
In the bottom of the seventh, an error on a bunt allowed MBU's base runner to advance to third. She then scored on the next play to end the game with a 5-4 loss.
The Owls outhit MBU 10-9.
Taylor went 3-3 from the plate with two doubles, one run scored and one RBI. Sermeno recorded two doubles at the plate, and Mahoney went 2-3 with a double, a home run, two runs scored and a RBI.
Kalee Wall (4-5) pitched the complete game. She threw two strikeouts while allowing four earned runs.
