Three Home Runs Power Owls to Game One Win Over Lyon

FULTON, Mo. – The William Woods University softball team used three home runs to power them to a mercy rule win over Lyon College in game one of the doubleheader Saturday afternoon, 8-0. The Owls then lost game two, 6-0, bringing them to 13-19 on the season with a 6-8 conference mark.
 
The Owls host St. Mary (Kan.) on Wednesday, April 21, for their final home doubleheader of the season. First pitch is slated for 3 p.m. 
 
Game One
The Owls scored at least one run in all five innings of the game. 
 
The Owls started the day with a bang, putting up three runs in the bottom of the first inning on two home runs. After two outs, Emma Taylor was walked. Mallory Feldewerth then hit a two-run homer over the left field fence to give the Owls a 2-0 lead. Alexis Hassler then came up to the plate and bombed her third home run of the season just to the right of the left field foul post. 
 
Ally Mahoney continued the home run party in the bottom of the second, knocking the ball over the center field fence four her fourth home run of the season. 
 
In the third inning, Mia Santos scored on Taylor's triple down the left field line. Feldewerth then singled to score Taylor, giving the Owls a 6-0 lead.
 
In the bottom of the fourth, Santos doubled to the left field fence and was brought home on Taylor's single to left-center field.
 
The Owls needed just one more run in the bottom of the fifth to end the game early. After two quick outs, Devyn Burton started the bats with a double down the left field line. An error on Ally Mahoney's at bat extended the Owls time with the bats, and Lyon then walked the next batter to load the bases. Celeste Sermeno hit a hard ball to right-center field, allowing Burton to cross home plate for the Owls' eighth run of the game.
 
Alexis Hassler (9-8) tossed a one-hitter complete game shutout, earning her ninth win of the season. She pitched 5.0 innings and struck out four. 
 
The Owls' offense put together 10 hits with six being extra base hits. Hassler, Feldewerth and Taylor each recorded two hits. Hassler, Mahoney and Feldewerth each hit home runs, and Taylor hit a triple. Feldewerth finished with three RBI, and Taylor finished with two.
 
Game Two
Lyon took a 1-0 lead in the second inning on a one-out home run. They went on to add five runs in the sixth inning.
 
The Owls were unable to score and grabbed just four hits at the plate.
 
Kalee Wall (4-6) pitched 5.2 innings and struck out one while allowing two earned runs. Hassler pitched the final 1.1 innings and struck out one.
