Owls Grab Two Wins with Strong Performances

BATESVILLE, Ark. – The William Woods University baseball team swept Lyon College on Sunday's second doubleheader of the series. They won game one's pitcher's dual in extended innings, 2-1. They went on to win game two, 9-1. The two teams finished the series 2-2, bringing the Owls to 14-13 on the season with a 7-9 conference mark.

The Owls will return back to action for a four-game home series with Hannibal-LaGrange University starting on Friday, April 23, at 3 p.m.

Game One
Lyon got on the board first on a sacrifice fly and held a 1-0 lead until the third.

Following a walk by Alex Wimer and a wild pitch to move him to second, Isaiah Gibbs doubled to left field to bring home Wimer and even the score at 1-1.

Neither team was able to score over the next two innings, and in the top of the sixth, the two teams had to pause for a lightning delay.

The Owls resumed at the plate after an hour-long break.

The two teams remained deadlocked after seven innings of play, forcing extra innings.

Lyon looked to end the game in the bottom of the eighth as they had bases loaded with just one out, but a strike out swinging and a failed attempt to steal home to end the game sent the game into the ninth inning.

Easton Wallace led off the top of the ninth with a walk. He moved to second on Tyklen Salmons' sacrifice bunt and went to third on Kamron Morriss' single to center field. A bobble on the pick up by center field gave Wallace enough time to head home and plate the Owls' go-ahead run.

The Owls' defense and pitching held Lyon to just three up, three down as a ground out and two strike outs ended game one with a 2-1 win.

It was a pitcher's game as each team finished with just four hits. Gibbs recorded two of the Owls' hits including a double and one RBI.

Max Storch (1-1) received the win on the mound. He pitched 1.2 innings in relief and struck out three of the four batters he faced.

Dylan Hansen pitched the first 7.1 innings and struck out four while allowing just four hits and one earned run.

Game Two
Since game one went into extra innings, game two then flipped to the seven-inning game.

The Owls jumped out to a 4-0 lead right out of the gate. Gibbs scored the first run of the game on a stolen base after a wild pitch tripped up the defense. The Owls then loaded the bases for Morriss to come up to the plate. Morriss smashed a double to the left field fence, bringing home Wallace and Zach Krause. Morriss then scored two plays later on an error.

Lyon scored one in the fourth on a wild pitch.

Morriss batted Jake Fleming home in the top of the fifth to give the Owls a 5-1 lead. Alex Owens then hit a sacrifice bunt to score Bryson Matthews.

The Owls topped off the game with three runs in the top of the seventh to win it 9-1. Morriss hit a RBI double down the left field line to score Fleming. Gibson then singled up the middle to score Erik Stewart, Morriss' pinch runner. Jack Niggemeier doubled to the left field fence, scoring Alex Wimer for the Owls' ninth run.

Morriss went 3-4 from the plate with four RBI, two doubles and a run scored. The Owls put together 11 hits total.

Brock Glavey (2-0) grabbed the win on the mound. He pitched 2.0 innings as relief, allowed no hits and struck out one.

Ryan Long started on the mound, pitching 3.0 innings and striking out four. Andrew Fyffe pitched the remaining two innings and struck out three.
