FULTON, Mo. – The William Woods baseball team opened the four-game series with Hannibal-LaGrange with a split on Thursday evening. The Owls and HLG extended game one into the eighth inning before HLG pulled ahead and won 4-2. Flipping to the seven-inning game, the Owls grabbed a game two 6-5 walk-off win.
The Owls move to 15-14 on the season with an 8-10 conference mark.
The two teams will conclude their four-game series with a doubleheader of Saturday, April 24, starting at 1 p.m. The Owls will honor their three seniors in between the two games.
Game One
HLG scored the first run of the game in the third inning on a RBI single. They added a second run in the sixth on a throwing error following a stolen base.
WWU plated their first run in the sixth on a wild pitch. They added the game-tying run in the seventh on
Jack Niggemeier's two-out RBI double to center field. The Owls were unable to score again, sending the game into extra innings.
HLG scored two in the eighth inning on a two-run home run. The Owls were unable to score in the bottom of the inning, ending with a 4-2 loss.
Marcus Gonzalez went 2-4 with two doubles. Niggemeier went 2-3 with a double, a RBI and one run scored.
Max Storch (1-2) came in as relief and was credited with the loss. He pitched 2.0 innings and struck out one.
Ryan Long started on the mound. He pitched 6.0 innings and struck out five while allowing no earned runs.
Game Two
HLG scored one early in the first inning on an error, and added two runs in the second to take a 3-0 lead.
Jordan Smith scored on an
Alex Owens' sacrifice fly in the bottom of the second to get the Owls on the board. They added three more in the third on
Chase Gibson's three-run homer to take a 4-3 lead.
HLG went back up by one in the fourth as they scored two on a two RBI double down the left field line.
Heading into the bottom of the seventh, the Owls trailed by one, 5-4. With just one out, the Owls loaded up the bases. A sacrifice fly from Gibson scored
Jack Niggemeier for the game-tying run, and the two base runners each advanced on the play.
Easton Wallace then smashed the ball to the right-center field gap to easily score Gonzalez for the game-winning run.
Gibson went 2-3 with four RBI and one run scored. Gonzalez and Wallace each finished with two hits.
Andrew Fyffe (2-2) grabbed the win on the mound. He pitched 3.2 innings and struck out five while allowing no runs.
Brock Glavey started on the mound and pitched 3.0 inning.
