Towery Tosses No-Hitter, Owls Dominate Hornets with Two Shutouts

 
ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The William Woods University softball team dominated Harris-Stowe State University Monday afternoon, earning two shutout victories. The Owls grabbed a game one 17-0 win before finishing the doubleheader with a 26-0 shutout in game two.
 
Ashlyn Towery tossed a no-hitter in game one.
 
The Owls move to 16-20 on the season with an 8-8 conference mark.
 
The Owls close out their regular season on Tuesday with a doubleheader at University of Health Sciences and Pharmacy starting at 4 p.m.
 
Game One
After a scoreless first inning, the Owls scored three in the second inning. HSSU walked in two Owls' runs, and Bri Devellano scored the third on Emma Taylor's sacrifice fly.
 
After three strikeouts in the bottom of the inning by Ashlyn Towery, the Owls headed into the third.
 
A two-run homer from Devyn Burton started off the Owls' big 10-run inning. Mia Santos and Katie Gaus each hit RBI singles to score Taylor Bell and Devellano. Lindy Wilson scored on an error, and Santos crossed home plate on a wild pitch to give the Owls 9-0 lead. Gaus scored on Hanna Knipp's RBI single, and a Burton sacrifice fly brought Taylor home. A Devellano RBI ground out scored Sarah Ostertag, and Knipp plated the Owls' 10th run of the game on Wilson's RBI single.
 
The Owls added one run in the fourth on an error to take a 14-0 lead.
 
In the fifth, the Owls plated three to take a 17-0 lead. Devellano scored on an error, Knipp RBI singled to score Santos, and Burton RBI singled to score Gaus.
 
The Owls finished with 16 hits. Knipp recorded four hits with two RBI and two runs scored. Burton went 3-4 from the plate with a home run, five RBI and two runs scored. Gaus finished with three hits, three runs scored and a RBI.
 
Towery (2-5) tossed a no-hitter in her complete game victory. She threw seven strikeouts and walked three through five innings in the circle.
 
 
Game Two
The Owls added to their success in game two, piling on 23 hits with 26 RBI. Eight of the starting line-up recorded multiple hits.
 
The Owls plated six runs in the top of the first to take an early lead. Ally Mahoney smashed a grand slam to clear the bases after Mallory Feldewerth drove in Celeste Sermeno for the first run of the game. Devellano scored the final run of the inning on a pop out. 
 
The Owls bombarded the Hornets in the third, piling on 11 runs to take a 17-0 lead. After Ostertag was walked in, Emma Taylor hit a two RBI double to score Sydney Wilbeck and Sermeno. Feldewerth RBI singled to score Jaden Swift, giving the Owls their 10th run. Wilson hit a two RBI double to left, scoring Taylor and Feldewerth, and Mahoney scored on an error. Wilbeck, Swift and Taylor each hit RBI singles to drive in runs before a double play ended the inning.
 
The Owls closed out their scoring in the fourth with nine runs, tallying 26 runs. Wilson scored first on an error, and Swift followed with a RBI single to score Ostertag. Gaus RBI singled to score Wilbeck, and another error allowed Sermeno to score. Swift scored on Mahoney's RBI single to give the Owls a 23-0 lead, and HSSU walked in the next two runs. A Wilbeck RBI single scored Wilson, and a Sermeno RBI single scored Devellano for the Owls' 26th run.
 
Six of the Owls' nine starting batters finished with three hits. Mahoney drove home five runs, Feldewerth drove in four, and Sermeno, Swift and Taylor drive in three.
 
Alexis Hassler (10-9) pitched two innings, allowed no hits and struck out three. Kalee Wall pitched the remaining three innings and struck out five while allowing just two hits.
