FULTON, Mo. – The William Woods University softball team swept Stephens College Tuesday afternoon for their first conference sweep of the season. The Owls grabbed a 7-0 shutout win in game one and finished out game two with a 6-2 win.
The Owls improve to 10-14 on the season with a 3-3 conference mark.
Next up for the Owls is the Think Pink games versus Hannibal-LaGrange on Friday, April 9, at 2 p.m.
Game One
Following one out,
Celeste Sermeno doubled to deep left-center field. After
Emma Taylor's single,
Mallory Feldewerth hit a RBI single to center field to plate Sermeno. After bases were loaded, Feldewerth was walked in for the Owls' second run.
The Owls put up five runs in the third with the help of SC's three errors to take a 7-0 lead.
Devyn Burton led off the inning with a double. After a walk and a bunt error, Burton scored. With runners on second and third,
Ally Mahoney doubled to the left-center field fence to score
Hanna Knipp. Hassler scored on
Lindy Wilson's RBI single to left field to give the Owls a 5-0 lead. Mahoney and Wilson then scored the final two runs of the inning for the Owls on
Mia Santos' double to the left-center field fence.
Neither team was able to score again, ending the game with a 7-0 shutout victory.
Alexis Hassler (6-6) pitched the complete game shutout. She tossed three strikeouts through seven innings.
The Owls outhit SC 11-6.
Game Two
SC struck first in game two, plating a run on a wild pitch in the top of the first.
In the bottom half of the inning, the Owls took a 2-1 lead. Feldewerth's RBI double to right field brought home Santos for the tying run, and Burton's RBI ground out to short scored
Emma Taylor for the go-ahead run.
Burton hit a RBI single to score Taylor in the third, giving the Owls a 3-1 lead.
In the bottom of the fourth, the Owls plated two more runs including one run off Feldewerth's RBI single to right field.
Katie Gaus singled up the middle to score
Ally Mahoney, giving the Owls a 6-0 lead.
SC plated one run in the top of the seventh on a fielder's choice. With bases loaded and two outs, SC popped out to first to end the game.
Hassler (7-6) pitched 6.2 innings and struck out three for the win.
Kalee Wall came in as relief and pitched the final out to earn the save.
