Owls Softball Stays Alive in AMC Championship

 
COLUMBIA, Mo. – The William Woods University softball team hung on to defeat Hannibal-LaGrange University in the elimination game to stay alive in the American Midwest Conference (AMC) Championship Thursday afternoon. Prior to the Owls' 6-5 win to remain in the AMC Championship, the Owls fell to Columbia, 7-5. 
 
The Owls will now face six-seeded Lyon on Friday, May 7, at noon. The winner will play the loser of the Columbia/Central Baptist game immediately following. The loser will be knocked out of the Championship.

Columbia def. William Woods, 7-5
WWU scored early with a RBI from Ally Mahoney to plate Emma Taylor in the top of the first.
 
CC matched in the bottom of the inning on an error. They added two more runs in the second on a RBI double and RBI single, one in the third on a RBI double and one in the fourth on a RBI single.
 
The Owls plated three in the fifth to bring the score to 5-4. Celeste Sermeno scored on wild throw. Mallory Feldewerth hit a two-out double to the right-center field fence to bring Jaden Swift home, and a bobble from the center fielder on the play allowed Feldewerth to score.
 
CC pushed their lead to three in the bottom of the inning as they had two cross home plate.
 
Feldewerth hit a RBI single to bring Taylor home in the top of the seventh, but the Owls were unable to score more, ending the game with a 7-5 loss.
 
Feldewerth went 4-4 from the plate with a double, two RBI and a run scored. Sermeno and Taylor each recorded two hits. 
 
Kalee Wall (5-7) pitched the complete game and was credited with the loss.

The Owls got on the board first on a two-out Sermeno two RBI single to score Mahoney and Devyn Burton in the second inning.
 
HLG evened the score in the top of the third on a two RBI double, but the inning ended as the runner tried to make it to third and was thrown out.
 
WWU went back ahead by two in the bottom of the inning with an error to score Alexis Hassler and a RBI single from Burton to score Mahoney.
 
A two-run homer from Taylor gave the Owls a 6-2 lead in the fourth inning. 

HLG matched in the top of the fifth inning by scoring two runs on a RBI single and a sacrifice fly, cutting the game to 6-4.
 
In the top of the seventh, HLG plated one on a RBI single to bring the game within one run, 6-5.
 
Mahoney went 3-3 from the plate with two runs scored. Sermeno recorded two hits with two RBI and a run scored.
 
Hassler (13-9) pitched the complete game win. Through 7.0 innings, she struck out four while allowing five runs.
