Owls Fall to Reigning NAIA National Champions MBU

FULTON, Mo. – The William Woods University volleyball team fell in three sets to reigning NAIA National Champions Missouri Baptist University. The Owls drop to 11-7 while starting conference play with an 0-1 record.
 
The Owls lost 16-25, 18-25, 16-25.
 
The Owls continue their home stretch on Saturday, Sept. 25, with a 2 p.m. match versus Harris-Stowe.
 
By The Numbers
14 – Tori Rosemann led the Owls with 14 digs, and Tess Schannuth assisted in 14 kills.
8 – Lanie Lowry recorded a team high eight kills.
7 – Hannah Kuehl put down seven kills.
3 – Kassidy Phillips blocked three MBU attacks.
 
Game Highlights
The Owls struck a 4-0 run early in set one starting with a kill from Tess Schannuth to take a 6-4 lead.  A block from Lanie Lowry and Kassidy Phillips, an ace from Hannah Kuehl and a kill from Lowry finished out the run. MBU responded with a 5-0 run to take back the lead, 9-6. MBU added a 5-1 run to take up a six-point lead, and went up by eight following three Owls' attack errors. MBU went on to win 25-16.
 
The Owls pieced together a 4-1 run midway through set two with a kill from Lowry and Schannuth and a block from Phillips and Schannuth to cut their deficit to four, 15-11. A 3-0 run starting two points later with kills from Phillips and Lowry and a bad set by MBU brought the Owls within three, 17-14. MBU pushed a 6-1 run to take their lead to 23-15. The Owls scored back-to-back points with kills from Phillips and Alli Gueck, but MBU ended the set with a 25-18 win.
 
MBU jumped out to an early 13-5 lead before the Owls called a timeout. The Owls closed the gap to five with three kills from three different attackers, 18-13, but MBU scored the next three. The Owls were unable to make their way back in and ended with a 25-16 loss.
