FULTON, Mo. – Excitement filled the classroom Thursday morning as the women's wrestling program signed their first-ever commit. Molly Johnson, a previous wrestler for Boonville High School, committed to the William Woods University Women's Wrestling Team, announced Head Coach Jacob Lorentz. Johnson was a pioneer for her local high school wrestling team and will serve as one for the Woods Wrestling team in this inaugural season.
"Molly brings many assets and life experiences to the wrestling team for the Woods," stated Coach Lorentz. "She served as one of the first female wrestlers in mid-Missouri, and that wealth of knowledge will bring a great deal of leadership to our young and thriving team. I look forward to watching her thrive in the free-style wrestling format in collegiate competition and be a pioneer for our team."
Unlike many other wrestlers, Johnson had a late start to her wrestling career – she began wrestling in her junior year of high school. Johnson was able to have a successful season, helping her team with a record of 2-7-1 in 2020 and 3-6-1 in 2021.
When asked why she picked William Woods, Molly shared the following: "William Woods has always held themselves to a much higher standard than other Universities and Colleges around them, and I hold myself to that same standard. I look forward to attending my top choice in Universities along with being an inaugural team member for the wrestling program."
Johnson, the daughter of Robin and Norman, plans to study Equestrian Science during her time at William Woods.
