Owls Volleyball Falls to Ranked Opponents at Hampton Inn Classic

FAYETTE, Mo. – The William Woods University volleyball team dropped both of their matches to ranked opponents at day two of the Hampton Inn Classic. The Owls first faced No. 21 Grand View University and challenged them to five sets. Next they faced No. 12 Eastern Oregon University and fell 3-0.
 
The Owls drop to 1-2 on the season after winning their season-opener over Tabor College.
 
The team next competes at the Go Sarpy Tournament hosted by Bellevue University on Friday-Saturday, Sept. 2-Sept. 3.

Match Highlights
The Owls pushed an 8-0 run to take a 15-6 lead in set one. A kill from Kassidy Phillips brought the Owls to 23-14, and a kill from Riley Alton brought the Owls to set point, 24-17. A GVU attack error won the set for the Owls, 25-17.
 
GVU jumped in the lead to start set two. The Owls evened the score three times before a small 3-0 run with two kills from Phillips and an ace from Ally Konarzewski put the Owls up 14-13. GVU pushed a 4-0 lead to take a 21-17 lead, and the Owls were unable to recover.
 
The Owls evened the score in set three at 14-14, but GVU outdid the Owls 11-4 to take a 2-1 match lead.
 
A block from Lauren Adams and Phillips started a 4-0 run early in set four to give the Owls a 6-2 lead. Another 4-0 run with a block from Lanie Lowry and Ella Lewis, an ace from Kennedy Flanner and a kill from Lowry gave the Owls an 11-7 lead, but GVU pushed a 6-0 lead to go up 16-13. A 5-0 push from the Owls put the team up by two late in the set, 21-19. An ace from Tori Rosemann brought the Owls to set point, and a block from Adams ended the set with a 25-23 win, evening the match at 2-2.
 
The Owls trailed through all of set five and ended with a 15-11 loss to drop the match 3-2.

Match Highlights
The Owls strung together a 5-0 run in the start of set one to take a 5-1 lead. A block from Rhakala Blackmon and Lowry evened the score at 9-9, but EOU crafted an 8-0 run to take a 17-9 lead. EOU finished the set with a 7-1 run.
 
Two blocks from  Adams and Paige Lamm alongside a kill from Phillips helped the Owls to a 5-0 run to take a 10-9 lead in set two. Back-to-back-to-back kills from Phillips put the Owls up 13-10. A kill from Lowry put the Owls up by one, 17-16, but EOU pulled back in the lead. A kill from Adams brought the Owls within three, 23-20, but EOU finished the set with two points.
 
The Owls blasted a 7-0 run to take a 10-3 lead to start set three; two points came from Finneran's aces and one from Reanna Dodge's kill. A kill from Lewis followed by a solo block from her doubled EOU's score, 16-8, but EOU flipped the switch and went on to win it 25-22.
