Owls Set Three Personal Bests In Opening Meet Win

NEVADA, Mo. - William Woods saw three new personal bests established on Friday night as the Owls blasted past the field for a first-place finish at the 2023 Cottey College Invitational. WWU carded 36 overall points - including a sweep of 10th through 14th overall - in the win, with Columbia College 19 points back and Missouri Baptist a further 14 points adrift. Jenson Starr was the top individual finisher for WWU, in third at 26:13.22, and Ian Schwierjohn took nearly a minute off of his previous personal best with a time of 26:36.82 in seventh. WWU finished with a team time of 2:14:00.23, averaging 26:48.05 for the top five finishers.

Running conditions on the course at Frank E. Peters Golf Course were decent, with rough footing in spots with tree roots and gravel mixed with a few golf cart path crossings. The 83-degree evening yielded a tightly-packed field on the men's side, with just 52.1 seconds between WWU's top finisher and final scoring runner. In addition to Schwierjohn, Dustin Russell and Frederic Zheng both set new personal bests. Zheng took better than a minute off of his previous PR with the finish.

The next meet for the Owls is the Larry Young Invitational, hosted by Columbia College. Woods hits the Gans Creek Running Course at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 15.
