MARYVILLE, Mo. - Whether it's cross country, indoor or outdoor track and field, William Woods University's Mekayla Gibson sure knows how to succeed in the 5k, opening her final indoor track and field season with a first-place time of 17:58.17 in the Mel Tjeerdsma Classic, hosted by NCAA Division II Northwest Missouri State University Saturday at Hughes Fieldhouse.

"It has been a fun and fast-paced week," William Woods track and field coach Anthony Stockton said after coaching his first competition at the helm of the program he competed for. "Coming back home to coach has been a dream come true. Seeing these amazing young women carry the torch is something I only saw from the outside. I am proud to be an Owl! Go Owls!"

Myra Baker also recorded a top-three finish, placing third in the 800-meter run with an indoor personal record time of 2:34.84, 2.94 seconds faster than her previous best. Also PR'ing and finishing in the top five of a track event, Hailey Gerard took fourth in the 5k at 19:03.76, 13.55 better than her previous top time, and Emma Clifford fifth in the 800 at 2:35.86, 3.97 quicker than her last.

On the field side, the Owls were led by freshman E.L. Reagan, runner-up in the pole vault, clearing 3 meters (9 feet and 10 inches) in her first collegiate competition.

Madison Dixon also had an outstanding meet for WWU, posting two PRs in the 60 dash at 8.22 seconds (prev. 8.25) and 200 at 27.88 (prev. 28.08).

Last but not least, the Owls 4x400 relay time of Clifford, Rylie Bales, Gerard and Baker already surpassed the program's fastest time last season by five seconds, clocking in at 4:27.52.

William Woods concludes the 2024 side of its schedule, competing in the Dutch Holiday Preview, hosted by NCAA Division III Central College at noon Friday at H.S. Kuyper Fieldhouse in Pella, Iowa.
