ROLLA, Mo. - Kyle Belgrave II and
Natalie Thomas edged closer to NAIA qualification marks in the long jump and javelin, and
Landon Dunlap cruised into the Woods top five in the 5,000 meters as William Woods competed in the Miner Invitational this weekend.
"Our team had a solid second meet of the season at the Miner Invitational," said head coach
Dan Schwab. "
Landon Dunlap ran himself into the second-best ever WWU men's 5,000 meter mark in his first attempt at the event, and set a tone for the rest of our squad, with all of our men in the 5,000 meters setting lifetime bests and a majority of our squad improving their PRs. Kyle Belgrave and
Natalie Thomas continue to inch closer to national standard as well."
Although not unfamiliar with the distance from his time on WWU's cross country squad, Dunlap was competing in the 5,000 meters for the first time this season, turning in a scorching time of 15:17.10. The mark is the second-fastest in WWU history, behind Owls hall-of-famer Ryan Meyer. The time is the fastest in the AMC this season and among the top 50 in the NAIA.
Belgrave II also extended his lead on the AMC performance list this season, coming up just shy of the NAIA 'B' standard with a leap of 7.09m. The mark ranks the Eustis, Fla., junior seventh in the NAIA, 0.06m shy of a national championship berth, and a full half-meter clear of his nearest competitor in the AMC.
Thomas also extended her lead in the AMC, with her mark of 38.32m in the javelin three meters clear of Columbia's Evelyn Roland and just over a meter shy of the NAIA 'B' standard. She sits tenth among NAIA competitors, within four meters of the top overall mark.
Also continuing her strong season was
Mekayla Gibson, shifting gears into the middle distance events for Woods. She was one of three runners to set new PRs in the 800 meters, adding a new PR in the 1,500 meters as well. She also ran the anchor leg for WWU in the 4x400 meter relay.
William Woods heads back to Fayette for its next meet, taking part in the CMU open on March 29-30.
